We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Giset King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Giset below.
Giset, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
To be a fitness instructor is more than just stepping in the room and lead a routine. To be a fitness instructor is connecting with people. People attend your classes not only to have a good workout, they attend your class, to smile, release stress or just to connect with people. One day a lady arrived late to my class. I never close my classroom doors to anyone. We never know what that person had to go through to attend your class. The moment that lady entered, she was smiling , hollering and so full of life. It was the first time she attended my class. I walked to her to ask her name and invite her to my next class. She told me she had a horrible morning and she was really upset. She heard the music in my class and walked in. She said my class brought so much joy to her heart. She told me her mood completely changed and she thanked me. Her story made my cry. What if I have told her she is too late to come in? It would ‘ve been a missed opportunity. So thankful for what I do. I love to mentor others to be healthy but also to make them feel pretty and sexy during class and empower them.
Giset, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I struggled with obesity my whole life. Moving to another country, a new job and post- partume depression made it worst. I was over 200lbs after my pregnancy. I was drinking coffee and diet cokes all day and still tired. in 2011 I started to work out and got down to 170lbs but nutrition was not the best. In 2012 I joined a health support group in Facebook. I fell in love with the dynamic and getting healthy became a lifestyle. I became a wellness coach in 2013 and started my fitness career in 2017. I am certified in PiYo, kickboxing, functional fitness, strength training and several Zumba formats. I have a M.S. in Psychology and love to use nutrition, workouts and psychology to help my client to live a healthy lifestyle. I want to teach women to get healthy and love themselves in the process. Healthy is not starving yourself. Healthy is about fueling your body and your mind.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I do videos and reels all the time!!! There are thousands of instructors. Why will they come to me? They will attend my classes because they can connect with me. Either they like my personality, my music or my philosofy that health is not determine by your size or the number on the scale. I post pictures or my classes, videos or new songs or the release of a new round. I like that 1 to 1 connection and personalize their experience and let them attend a class for free. I am very confident about my classes and I know once they try them , they will be hooked.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When Covid -19 came it was a hard time. All gyms started to close and practically lost my second income. I started to learn about virtual classes. I started to get the equipment I needed and practice how to give a good virtual class. However, a lot of instructors were giving free classes, so it was hard. I decided to start a hybrid format of virtual on demand classes and then live classes in the weekends. It was a hit for working moms. They had a workout on demand during the week and then a face to face options in the weekends. Our weekends workouts were more than just a workout, it was sisterhood. We talked, we laughed, we prayed for each other it was such a huge support network during that difficult time. I didn’t give up . There were days that only 1 person showed up and other times 10 people showed up. However, I was consistent. When you are your own boss, you need to be 110% with 1 person or with a 100 people. That experience taught me so much and I am so thankful for it.
