Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Giselle Roca. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Giselle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Plenty of obstacles came my way when I started my small business, dealing with customers can be a big one. Some people see your work as easy and don’t expect to be charged accordingly. Sometimes when creating a custom piece for someone the materials you picked out don’t work well or you are stuck with a design they requested. I always have to remember to be honest and tell the customer I am having a hard time doing what they asked and if we can maybe modify it or I may suggest someone who can do it for them. Of course, there will be times where you are working with people and they might not treat your respectfully. I’ve learned to be firm but still respectful because at the end of the day you can’t allow people to disrespect you and your business. All in all, I love what I do and wouldn’t change it for the world!
Giselle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a self taught calligrapher, born and raised in Miami with such a multicultural community it has always influenced me to be creative and fun. I’m also a certified Teacher and being creative has helped me in that sense too. When I was younger I always enjoyed seeing my mom write cursive and I would try to imitate it. When I became an adult, there was an interest in typography and lettering that I kept seeing in signs or books so I decided I would teach myself I watched youtube videos, completed online courses and bought books to teach me how to letter. The most essential skills to have I believe are having a steady hand and being efficient. There were times where I couldn’t buy a fancy pen or marker to write with so crayola markers would do the trick or even a regular pen. I have grown a lot from the time I started just for fun. I am proud to collaborate with amazing wedding planners and be a part of peoples most special day. My business is aimed to please and be unique, if a client has a specific idea in mind I never refrain from it. I will try my best to bring your visions to life.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I have had a lot of different goals throughout the years and I can say I’ve reached a good amount. My main one currently is to collaborate more with different wedding planners and create those strong connections so that one day I can live off of my business and be happy doing what I love.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I started on social media, specifically Instagram, I didn’t think it would take off as a business. I had my personal instagram until a friend encouraged me to open one to share my creative side. I say never hold back from posting, don’t try to be a Pinterest board. What matters is the value of your content, make it simple but educating. Don’t overthink what you want to share, if its a video of you talking or a picture of your product. Make sure to track the time your posts perform best and stick to it. Communicating with your followers is also great, via comments or stories. You always want to hook your audience if creating a reel or TikTok and remember to be authentically yourself, people love to see that!
