Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Giselle Manzano Ramirez . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Giselle , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Certainly, my most meaningful project is KRATER, an artistic incubator challenging the conventional fashion landscape. KRATER embraces the harmonious intersection of sustainable fashion design, performance art, and electronic music. It provides a cost-free platform for emerging designers during New York Fashion Week, eliminating financial barriers and promoting equal opportunities.
Our event operates as a cost-free platform for creatives to showcase their work during New York Fashion Week, representing a deliberate effort to eliminate financial barriers and ensure equal opportunities for talented designers from marginalized backgrounds.

Giselle , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Colombian designer and artist based in New York, also the founder and creative director of KRATER.
My journey began in graphic design and visual communication, specializing in branding, logo design, and digital illustration. I’ve collaborated with renowned clients like Conde Nast and Candy Pratts Price, with my low poly illustrations gaining viral attention and recognition from Adobe, Behance, and Design Taxi. Exhibiting my work internationally, including at the Colombian Embassy in New York, showcased my dedication to the craft.
Upon moving to New York, I found inspiration in the city’s fashion scene, leading me to explore styling. Vintage shopping became a gateway to vibrant prints and colors, merging my graphic design background with fashion. Working in vintage fashion raised my awareness of environmental impact, driving me to specialize in textile art and sustainable practices. Crossing the realms of art and fashion, my focus shifted to experimental printmaking techniques.
As a stylist and curator, I actively support social and environmental causes. I’ve partnered with organizations like ReFashion Week, NYC Department of Sanitation, Canvas by Querencia, Housing Works, and Goodwill. Additionally, I’ve spoken at conferences held at Pratt Institute and have been featured in prestigious publications such as Vogue, Teen Vogue, Paper Magazine, Business Insider, and more. Recently acknowledged by Domestika, I now share my expertise globally through online courses, teaching textile design and upcycling.
In my role as a stylist and curator, I’m deeply committed to social and environmental causes. Collaborating with organizations like ReFashion Week, NYC Department of Sanitation, Canvas by Querencia, Housing Works, and Goodwill, I actively contribute to impactful initiatives. I’ve had the privilege of speaking at conferences hosted by Pratt Institute and garnered recognition in leading publications, including Vogue, Teen Vogue, Paper Magazine, Business Insider, and others. Now recognized by Domestika, I extend my expertise globally through online courses, teaching the art of textile design and upcycling to a diverse audience.
In the vibrant underground music scene, I joined forces with emerging artists and DJs, embracing the roles of both designer and stylist for performances at prestigious venues. This venture ignited my journey into organizing independent fashion shows, seamlessly intertwining the worlds of fashion, art, and electronic music. Inspiration came from co-producing events with Nikki Cardona from TYSM, Lorenzo Gonzalez Lamassonne from ROLLUP, and Tilly D Wolfe from VERS. Later I decided to not only do my own fashion events and shows, but also create a platform where I could assist like minded designers to have a professionally produced fashion show. KRATER came to life thanks to the Creatives Rebuild NY Guaranteed Income for Artists Program, the support of Bryan Kasenic, founder of The Bunker NY, the mentorship program from Beyond Booking, and the production team at House of Yes.

WHAT PROBLEMS YOU SOLVE FOR YOUR CLIENTS AND OR WHAT YOU THINK SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS
As an immigrant designer and artist, I’ve faced numerous challenges navigating the creative landscape in this country. Rather than succumbing to these obstacles, they’ve become the driving force behind my daily pursuit of turning dreams into reality. My personal journey inspired the creation of KRATER, a haven for intersectional artists like myself, where we traverse the complexities of social identities within our creative expression.
Our event proudly stands as a cost-free platform for creatives. Establishing this platform during New York Fashion Week is not just a choice; it is a declaration. It is a vital step towards championing inclusivity and diversity, a deliberate move to eliminate financial barriers and ensure equal opportunities for talented designers from marginalized backgrounds. This initiative signifies more than a positive shift; it is a seismic change towards a fashion landscape that is equitable, representative, and fiercely rejecting historical exclusivity. As a self-produced event, we depend on our community to breathe life into our vision, with ticket sales directly fueling the realization of our event. This underscores the collaborative effort required to bring forth our collective vision, supporting designers and artists in turning their creative dreams into a vibrant reality. In KRATER, we find not just an event but a living testament to the transformative power of unity and creative expression.
WHAT TYPE OF PRODUCTS/ SERVICES/ CREATIVE WORKS I PROVIDE
As and artist and designer:
I use clothing as a medium to convey deep meaning and emotion. Employing unconventional printmaking techniques, textile manipulations, and surface embellishments, I craft unique pieces that explore the intersection of art and design. Launching my own fashion practice involves reworking and upcycling garments, turning them into one of a kind pieces. Fashion, to me, is a tool for both individual and collective empowerment and self-expression, connecting through shared human experiences. My textile work is autobiographical and represents themes like liberation, resilience, and rebirth.
My art and design practice is evolving into a fusion of textile art, sculpture and performance. Audiences embark on a transformative journey into the realms of human emotion and spirituality, delving into the healing potential of art.
