Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Girl at the Rock Shows. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Girl at the thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I had a great day job up until about a year ago. It wasn’t glamorous– it was literally selling nuts and bolts at a fastener supply company– but it was perfect for me. I love my co-workers, loved the family that owned the company, and loved all of my customers with all of my heart. Although I loved it, I felt restless. It was actually a co-worker who sparked this whole idea of starting a blog about my concert adventures (that’s a whole other story) and, as soon as I started it, I felt a sense of life that I had been missing. After a few years, I realized that I was beyond exhausted and was spread too thin with the blog, the day job, and my booking company that I did on the side so, with the encouragement of friends, family, and coworkers, I put my two weeks in at my day job and stepped away after nearly ten years. I left the insurance, left the consistent pay, left the 401K matching, and didn’t look back. It still remains a scary thing to me and was absolutely the biggest risk I’ve ever taken but I regret nothing!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started this blog by just reviewing live concerts with nothing hidden. I am blatantly honest about what I see and like to write more about the atmosphere and vibe of a show rather than the actual music. Obviously, live music came to a screeching halt due to the pandemic so I quickly shifted to album reviews and interviews with artists. Much like my live show reviews, I continued to do everything I do with a sense of heart and honesty. Now that live music is back, I am continuing to do all of the above and constantly strive to give people the honest report back on live shows and album reviews.
How did you build your audience on social media?
All of my social media accounts have grown organically. I try not to get wrapped up in the numbers which I really think has helped me personally but it’s always nice when you wake up to a lot of new likes! I think just being honest with clients and tagging them in everything you post helps when it comes to gaining their interaction!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Just today I got tagged in an Instagram story of a woman who I had done a review for. It was her voice on top of her scrolling through my review. The shock in her face and her shakey voice as if she was trying not to cry was all I needed to feel rewarded in a beautiful way. I think when your hard work is noticed just like you are noticing the hard work of others, that’s the cherry on top to this job!
