Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Giovannie Dixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Giovannie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
Man I always think about the idea of where would I be now if I had started doing art earlier but I am a firm believer of everything happening for a reason so ultimately the answer is no. I am happy with when I started doing art and when I got into the business of art, which has all been within the last five years.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Giovannie Dixon, an athlete turned artist and Im known for my large scale murals through out phoenix, Arizona and America. I was born and raised in LA to two immigrant parents from Jamaica. I got a late start when it comes to art because I was too busy chasing the professional football dream that many inner city kids chase because to many of us that’s the only way out the “hood”. I’ve been painting for five years now, all self taught but looking forward to taking some classes at some point. What I love about starting and learning on a big scale with spray paint is that it really allowed me to think outside the box of what “art” is suppose to be. Which then allowed me to fall in love with so many aspects that come with it. The process of exploring mediums, colors, techniques, they all have so much depth to them and through them all have gotten to learn so much about myself, who I am, what I want, and how I wanna show up and I still pay attention to these things through every project, every breakthrough and even every struggle.
Now I’m in a place of understanding that I am a business and not just an artist so I’ve dedicated more of my time to learning business. Learn how to be better with my finances and more importantly diversify my income. With murals being my primary I am now doing more canvas work and hopefully do more recycled art pieces from cans I use for my mural projects. I don’t throw away my cans anymore so I have at least ten big boxes of empty cans waiting to be recycled and turned into art. I can’t wait til I get around to that. I also enjoy assisting other artist on big projects, I love seeing artist succeed and if I can help them during those difficult projects sign me up. So if you are a business looking for some art to hang or a mural to be painted feel free to reach out and if your an artist needing some highly efficient and productive assistance give me a call. If you just want your house to look even cooler we can do that too. And I get people asking about wanting to learn all the time so yes I can teach you a few things. Just gotta ask.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is making something out of nothing or out of just an idea that came to mind. And every time you do it you just build more and more confidence in yourself and with more confidence comes crazier and bigger creations. It almost becomes a game of “well shit let’s see if I can do it” and then you do it. There’s nothing better then that kind of dopamine hit.
