We recently connected with Giovanna Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Giovanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My mom has been my biggest influence and supporter that I have. She has taught me to do things right and always be respectful and honest at work. Without her help I wouldn’t be where I’m today.
Giovanna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I fell in love with editing videos at the age of 17 when I was a junior in High School. My dream then was to one day work for tv or movies.
In 2014 I worked as a video assistant for weddings and quinceaneras which made me realize how fun and special it was to capture special moments for people. I took a break as I became a mom and my priorities changed. In 2019 my husband gifted me a camera and that’s where I knew it was time to go back and work for my passion. I took online and physical courses to learn new techniques and I started my own photography and videography business. People started referring me and I gained more experience.
In 2022 I started shooting Weddings and Quinceañeras, and even though I love capturing those moments I knew that I wanted to do something else in life, so in October 2022 I applied for a position at Univision Kansas City, a Hispanic TV station, and I got the job! I’m now their videographer and editor and again, my priorities and goals have changed. I believe this is my dream job and I couldn’t be happier. But I do want to thank all of those clients who gave me an opportunity to work on their special moments because without those experiences I wouldn’t have gained the confidence I now have for my work. And also a huge “Thank You” to my family because they have always shown support to my dreams.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, in October when I closed my books and stopped taking new clients for events and went on to work as a videographer for the tv station. It was a huge change in my personal and professional life. But it was worth it, because it made me realize that I have found my dream job!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
It goes back to the previous question, I had to unlearn the way I edited videos for my own clients to learn a new editing process for my new job.
