We recently connected with Gino Tozzi and have shared our conversation below.
Gino, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When you were first starting out, did you join a firm or start your own?
In real estate you must join a brokerage first before you can start your own brokerage. The only way to start your own brokerage is to get a brokers license. Then you can either stay with the brokerage you are at, jump to a new one, or start your own new brokerage. When I got into the business, it was very important for me to learn the landscape as best as possible. In order to do that I studied all of the local brokerages in my area and interviewed at several of them. I wanted to make sure that when I got into this new career, that I would click with whoever I partnered with to develop my business. The decision for me to take my time in deciding who to join has paid off since I have stayed with the same broker since I got into the field in 2017.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Real estate is all about helping clients solve their problems when it comes to real property and other areas impacting real property. The way it works is the more people you help in the day the more likely you are to succeed in this career.
At Real Estate One we are all about outreach, communication, goalsetting, and execution. Those things coupled together with serious buyers, sellers, landlords, and tenants allow us to help them solve their problems when it comes down to disposing or acquiring a real property asset permanently or temporarily.
Our culture is also about giving back to the community. We do this in many ways where we give back to the Michigan Special Olympics among other charities that Real Estate One supports. This is personally why I dedicate a lot of time to the business of the board, the MLS, my alma mater, and my children’s school.
Much of my success in real estate has to do with prior success in other careers. Before real estate I was a successful student and became a successful college professor in political science where my research specialized in public opinion. Had there been a good position in that field around the metro Detroit area I probably would have stayed in that career. because I was doing well and having a lot of fun doing it.
I think that past experience and education has helped me stand out from others that are in the real estate space. It leads to quicker and more efficient problem-solving, happier clients, and solutions that work for all sides. Real estate should be a win-win game, and that is my focus is to make sure that my client wins while making sure that the process is respected so the other client feels like they are getting value out of the transaction. Doing that and people will respect you, and more likely respect our industry if everyone tried doing that.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot was when I switched careers from higher education, to the research business, and then to real estate sales. In hindsight for me it was not a huge pivot because I had the skills necessary to succeed. However going from a salaried long-term career position to a 100% commission based position is a shocker to most people and something that took a while for me to adjust to.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with clients by emailing them birthday greetings, holiday greetings, reminders to set their clock forward and backward, and schedules of their favorite sports teams among other outreach. I also send mailers to them in a five-year plan. I also call them at least once a year to see how they’re doing. Many of them are also followers of me on social media. So I am usually top of mind for my past clients and sphere of influence.
