We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gino Mingo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gino, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Probably the most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my book Black Belt Discipleship. I have been in the ministry for almost 30 years, which entailed speaking/preaching, singing, and helping people walk out of a victim mentality into a victorious mentality! What I’ve learned over the years is that people don’t truly grasp the difference between knowing something and having an understanding of something. This becomes evident when the rubber meets the road, and we are not able to manifest on the outside what we “think’ we know on the inside. Being an ex-professional athlete I learned the difference early on in life. And I learned it’s not about the head-knowledge that you have, but the head-knowledge that you put into practice that makes the difference in life. Although Black Belt Discipleship is a spiritual book, its principles are applicable in every area of life. We are creatures that have been created to make everything second nature whether good or bad through our conscious or unconscious practices. This project teaches us that training in all areas of life is key! Training implies failure, but the more you train, the less you fail! Training causes you to ‘become’ something, and when you become that ‘thing,’ you then have the confidence to accomplish what you need to in whatever particular activity you are flowing in!

Gino, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am in the spiritual coaching business, with a desire to see families strengthened, lives changed, and success being more than how much money you make. I went into the ministry in 1993, I am an inspirational speaker, a vocalist with two CDs on my resume, an author, and spiritual life coach. What sets me apart is my unique gift mix, communication style, and diverse background in professional sports and professional music realm! I am most proud of my family which consists of my beautiful wife Michelle and my 5 intelligent and highly talented soccer-playing daughters; my book and two recording CDs are a close second!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There is one particular book that always resonates with me by John Maxwell entitled: The Five Levels of Leadership. What stands out the most to me is that the most important level is level four, Level four is about People Development. John says, “When you help individual leaders grow it extends your influence and impact!” In my eyes, there’s nothing more impactful than being able to help others move past personal success into true significance! Plenty of people are successful but don’t feel significant, but everyone who is significant in some area is automatically successful!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist the most rewarding thing to me is moving people to want to be more, do more, and change for the better! It’s not enough for me to just sound good to you, or for you to simply like what I wrote or said. My reward is when I know I moved someone at their core to be better!
