We were lucky to catch up with Ginny Kappel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ginny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
When my long-time close friend, Michelle, called me and asked me to go into business with her. I was on a self-retreat taking much needed time for myself when Michelle called me with a burning question. She was ready to get back into the massage field and wanted to know if I’d join her in business. We were both so excited, we knew it was about to be our reality. At that point, I had only been in business for myself for a little over a year. I was seeing clients 100% via telehealth but really starting to miss the in-person therapy sessions. I was at a point of contemplation-should I work for someone else again? Should I find my own rental space? Am I just meant to see clients virtually forever? I also had just taken the step to further my wellness coaching career by seeking certification and going down my own wellness path. Michelle calling to ask if I wanted to join in business together creating wellness for others filled my soul.
Ginny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story! My name is Ginny Kappel and I am the co-owner of Bloom Mind + Body Co., a wellness center dedicated to providing holistic mind and body services. Before I tell you about myself as a professional, I think it’s important to identify myself as a human being first. There’s the good, the bad, and the ugly. All of my triumphs and challenges are defining characteristics of who I am. I continue to learn more about myself through self-reflection and discovery, who I am as a wife, mom, daughter, friend, business owner, and working with amazing clients.
My journey into this industry began with a deep-seated passion for helping others achieve balance and well-being. The more work I did on myself, the more I realized how much I could offer others. With a background in psychology, counseling and coaching, I found myself drawn to the transformative power of holistic practices and the profound impact they can have on an individual’s life. One thing about me is that I’m always growing and learning. I’m never going to be the person or professional that just settles in. I love change. I find contentment in the work I do and the way I choose to live my life, but I am a constant seeker of growth, learning, and development.
At Bloom, we offer a wide range of services, including mental health counseling, coaching, massage therapy, bodywork, breathwork and mindfulness practices. Our goal is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment where clients can explore their personal growth, manage stress, and achieve overall wellness. We believe in the power of an integrated approach, combining mental and physical health to create a comprehensive wellness experience.
There are a few things that sets us apart as wellness providers. The first thing I take pride in is how real we are. We are genuine, authentic people that care about the work we do, the people we serve and the employees we dream of creating a career with. The other important commitment we have is to our own education and staying up-to-date with the latest research in the field. We are dedicated to providing our clients with evidence-based practices that truly make a difference. Building my reputation in this industry has been a deeply personal and evolving journey, shaped by so many factors:
Commitment to ongoing learning: I am constantly excited by new theories, modalities, and innovative ways to help my clients. I’ve noticed how much my clients appreciate new approaches and how it contributes to their overall progress.
Authentic relationships: Building genuine, authentic relationships is essential to my practice. Whether it’s with my business partner, clients, or other professionals in the wellness field, these connections are built on trust, empathy, and mutual respect. By understanding each person’s unique needs and goals, I create a supportive environment that fosters trust and loyalty.
Community engagement: I have a deep passion for community engagement. Hosting networking events, pop-up sessions, and workshops allows me to connect with people on a deeper level and share my expertise. These engagements not only provide valuable insights but also establish my presence and commitment to the community. Additionally, I receive a significant number of referrals from current clients, which speaks to the trust and satisfaction they have in my services.
Any advice for managing a team?
As a counselor and leader/co-owner, I think about creating an inviting, genuine, healthy workplace everyday. I believe that managing a team and maintaining high morale requires a thoughtful and intentional approach. Here are some key pieces of advice:
Open communication: Creating an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, and concerns is essential. We have scheduled, regular check-ins, feedback sessions, and open dialogues. By actively listening and caring about one another, we build trust and a sense of belonging. We know we all are valued.
Boundaries and balance: Respecting and supporting our team’s work-life balance is critical for us at Bloom. Our company exists to serve clients and teach them about creating boundaries and fostering balance in their lives. We are best able to do that when we feel respected and valued in our own boundaries.
A culture worth working for: Our workspace is welcoming and inspiring. When employees walk in, we want them to feel supported and empowered. Sometimes we have fun and enjoy our chill, casual Friday meetings in our workout clothes, fostering a relaxed atmosphere. We balance this with a deep commitment to personal and professional growth, ensuring everyone feels valued and motivated. At Bloom, we believe that a positive work environment leads to better service for our clients and a happier, more engaged team.
Recognize and celebrate achievements: It’s important to acknowledge both individual and team accomplishments. I firmly believe in regularly celebrating successes, whether big or small. Reflecting on progress and success is something I do with my clients and I know it plays a vital role in morale as well.
Professional development: We love having a team that is dedicated to learning and growing as professionals but also to offer more to our clients. We feel encouraged to continue education and seek out training that energizes the work we do with our clients.
