We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ginger Allen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ginger below.
Hi Ginger, thanks for joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I was excited to start my business but unsure if the small city market could sustain another company like mine. So I reached out to a lady named Eileen who had a company similar to the one I wanted to start and asked her if she thought there was room in our small market for another company like hers. To my surprise, she said yes and then went on to say that she would be happy to refer people to me because she could not handle all the referrals she was getting. So I opened my business and true to her word she referred me my first 3 clients. She also became a close friend and mentor and we are still close and cross refer 10 years later.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The first couple of years in business is usually the hardest. My first 2 years I wanted to quit many times and I would call my friend who has an marketing agency business like mine and she would support me through those difficult days. It’s a game of perseverance for sure. I pushed through making almost no money those first couple of years and now just celebrated 10 years in business. Make sure you get a mentor to help you throught those first years, I found it to be crucial. I know the SBA has a program called SCORE, which offers this service for free.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to learn is, it’s not how much revenue you generate, it’s all about the net profit. Last year I hit one of my biggest revenue years and I was super excited until I looked that my net profit and realized it was not that great. This taught me to be much more diligent in tracking my budget and my spending. It also taught me to make sure I am adding enough profit into my proposals to cover the overhead and profit.
