We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gina Moore-Herring. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gina below.
Hi Gina, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents provided an unlimited amount of commendable actions, so highlighting just one thing is challenging. Their unwavering consistency in showing love and support, however, encompasses everything they did right.
In a world where people and situations change quickly, my parents were the stable constant in the lives of their six children. Exhibiting love was their job as parents, but the support, and acceptance they provided, has lasted throughout my life even when I stumbled or faltered. The gazing look of approval when my siblings and I entered into their presence as children, was the empowering force that fuels me as an adult, even today. It provided the certainty that they would be there no matter what. It is a look that echoes the belief that I can transcend all fears and limitations to become anything I aspire to be.
My parents led and continue to lead by example as great leaders in their community, as activist who marched for civil rights during the seventies era of segregation. They became business-minded entrepreneurs, obtained college degrees, and became visionaries who invested in their community during the drug infested eighties. They continue to inspire my journey. Overall, the empowering seeds my parents planted, serve as a reminder of my strength, my significance, and overall purpose that God has ordained for me.
Gina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Those closest to me call me, “G”. I am a multi-layered individual with many talents, gifts, wisdom, and experience. I am a proud New Yorker and a graduate of NYU. In the realm of business and technology, my professional career spans over 25 years, where I have excelled as a Business Transformation Strategist and certified Change Management Practitioner. On the creative side, I continue to find fulfillment as a Writer, Filmmaker, and Digital Graphic Content Creator, subsequently leading to the launch of Big G lil g Visions.
Growing up, there were three things I loved to do to express myself; dress up in fashionable colorful clothing, act silly dancing and performing around the house, and I loved writing to create interesting stories with characters I could relate to.
To satisfy my passion for fashion, I pursued an education at Fashion High School and Fashion Institute of Technology. This knowledge led to securing a much-coveted dream job at Calvin Klein, which marked the beginning of a remarkable career trajectory. My journey to Gerber Technology would last over a span of 10 years as I learned the importance of technology in business and its pivotal role in global operations. This experience introduced international travel opportunities and the cultivation of enduring professional relationships. It was also the catalyst to spearheading my own consulting company where I used my communication and business savvy skills to implement ways to save corporations time and money through strategic thinking.
To satisfy my creative skills, I continue writing, developing content, and creating short films. In 2008 I published a children’s book, marking a significant milestone in my creative journey. I began writing and producing plays as fund-raisers for my church. This work provided an outlet for my creative expression while allowing me to engage in performance, choreography, and dance. When I became a certified Zumba instructor, I established a following of others who loved dancing. Subsequently, partnering with my then-husband, we acquired a Curves gym for women, wherein I integrated dance as a fun and exhilarating form of fitness, and fostered the growth of an expanded health-conscious dance community.
While I am proud of my accomplishments, the one that provides the most fulfillment is my role as a mother to my daughters, Rachel and Leah. Nurturing and guiding them as they evolve into resilient women of color, equipped with valuable life skills and integrity, surpasses any other achievement in my life.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2016, my resilience was tested when I weathered what would come to be the most challenging year of my life thus far. It was a period of great loss and disarray. I had the misfortune of losing my 3-story home situated on a beautiful acre of land in the Poconos. My Curves Gym franchise dissolved, which included the loss of many relationships, then the depletion of my financial reserves. All of this was amidst the emotionally taxing process of going through a divorce and uprooting my children from their home and friends. As everything in my world was unraveling, all I could think of was what I was losing, and it began to take a toll on my mental and physical health. Granting myself the grace to grieve the dissolution of material things and the lifestyle to which I had grown accustomed, it all became essential to my process to move forward.
In this same year of turmoil, I attended NYU’s Women’s Film Festival, and met Kelly Edwards, former HBO Executive, Writer, Producer, and Entertainment Expert who served as moderator. When I shared that I was ready to return to school to study filmmaking, she inspired me to apply to NYU, and I did. On May 20th, 2022, I proudly graduated from NYU. My educational journey served as a nurturing experience for my God-given talent to write engaging stories, while delivering powerful messages.
Further validation came in 2018, and 2022 when my work was chosen for NYU’s Dovetail publication, the annual art/literary journal devoted to publishing and honoring the voices, craft, and originality of emerging writers and artists.
The tumultuous year of 2016, though painful, marked the turning point in reconstructing my own life’s narrative. I redirected my focus to my resilience in overcoming great loss as I relied on faith through my journey.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My writing began while journaling as a teenager. I documented celebratory and challenging moments in my family. But when a friend expressed her love for reading my emails because they represented a narrative quality, I realized I had the skill of creative writing. I began writing short stories, published a children’s book, designed documentation for educational institutions, and developed communication plans for large corporations. This professional writing also paved the way for a niche specializing in crafting personalized obituaries, programs, graphic content, videos, and all facets associated with funeral/homegoing services. Driven by my compassion for others, I found my calling in the business of creating exquisite graphics to support families during their moments of bereavement.
In 2022, I released an updated version of the documentary I produced in 2012, now recognized as “ The Warmth of The Sun”. The film is dedicated to the memory of my late sister, Brenda Renee Moore, who courageously battled the AIDS virus from 1992 onwards, while persevering through two decades marked by a heart attack, lung cancer, a stroke, and kidney disease. This documentary is the result of pulling from years of chronicling the illness of my sister. The story is rooted in the power of family love and spirituality during Brenda’s struggles with drug addiction, enduring pain, and years of affliction. “The Warmth of The Sun” stands as a testament to Brenda’s spirit and unwavering strength in the face of adversity. She confronted her challenges with grace, elegance, and humor, often serving as an inspiration to others, even from the confines of her hospital bed. My goal is to turn this documentary into a full-feature film because Brenda’s story is “Not Just Another AIDS Tragedy!”
