We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gina Mazza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gina below.
Alright, Gina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
True success, I believe, is knowing what drives you internally, your passion areas, what brings you most alive, and what you were put on this earth to do—and not from some externally derived metric or who others in your life think you should be or do. It comes down to knowing yourself and allowing that to inspire your life path.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I serve as a trusted muse who helps ignite a creative spark in others, and then I mentor them through every aspect of brainstorming, writing, editing and publishing in various forms. I bring to bear everything I’ve achieved in 30+ years as a writer, author, journalist, book editor, publishing consultant, speaker, and communications and marketing pro to support my author clients’ writing and publishing dreams. I’ve helped them go onto secure literary agents, land book/film deals, build successful brands and enjoy exciting writing and speaking careers.
My approach is somewhat unique in that I integrate my decades of intensive study in the fields of consciousness, spirituality, healing and psychology. I draw on my intuitive capacities through every step of the process to help the client elucidate, unfold and articulate their deeply held message.
At the core of everything I do is a passion for story. Storytelling is ingrained in our DNA and it’s how we comprehend the full spectrum of life’s meaning. In the beginning was “the word” and from day one, language has held the power to set the collective trajectory of our humanity. Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey stems from a deep space within my heart, and has always felt like it’s an answer to an assignment that was placed on my soul from the time I was very young. I’ve always sensed, even if I couldn’t articulate it, that creative expression is essential to one’s life, health and well being. From very early on in my life, my two greatest loves were dance and writing. I was often discouraged from being my natural wildly expressive self, and was later told that I couldn’t make a living at either of these pursuits—that I should follow a “sensible career path” instead.
Well, I guess I proved them wrong! The myth of the “starving artist” is a mirage to me now, and those who can authentically invent through their creations (instead of replicate) are more in demand than ever. My work for the past four decades has been not only continually push my edge as a writer in various forms, genres, etc., but to also serve as a creative alchemist of sorts to assist others in bringing their deeply felt expressions into form, mostly through the written word.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn relates to the “right brain, left brain” neuro-theory … that a person is either a visual, artistic and intuitive thinker (right brain) or an analytical, orderly and logical thinker (left brain). It’s estimated that 68% of the general US population believes this.
As I ventured into my entrepreneurial career in my late twenties, and ever since then as the founder of 3 small businesses, I’ve discovered that I love most aspects of growing and leading a company. Not just building the brand and handling all of the creative projects, but also crunching the numbers, tracking sales projections, preparing financial statements, and nurturing employees and team members. It’s as if overseeing these tasks gives the right-brain part of me a reprieve, so that when I go back to highly creative tasks, I feel refreshed. I’m convinced that the whole brain works in tandem, and that we have so many more capabilities than we may give ourselves credit for.
