We recently connected with Gina Jacobson and have shared our conversation below.
Gina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents were hard-working and strong role models. Both the oldest of their gender from families with 8 kids, it was ingrained in them to take care of people and to pull their own weight. Even though my mother’s work was at home, her belief in and use of her abilities for other pursuits remained strong. My father worked in business and still cooked dinner for our family at least once a week, fixed things around the house, and spent time with us every day. If there were needs, both of my parents were not only there for us but also for others in the family and community and that was truly inspiring.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Although my business, CL Designs, is an interior design business, much of my work involves providing services to my clients. What sets me apart in this area is that I follow through on my word, provide clear deliverables, take the time to source non-toxic, quality products for my clients, and set aside my own assumptions about how a space should be used in favor of my clients’ actual plans for it.
My designs are tailored to existing architecture or sites and offer an uncompromising balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a professional who offers consulting services, my clients look to me to offer guidance on interior design projects in which they may see certain areas as problematic even though I can see that other areas may be to blame. So, a lesson that I had to unlearn is that “the client is always right”; which is not about unlearning empathy and respect for clients, just unlearning the idea that they know exactly what interior object sizes, colors, placement, etc. they may want in their home or workspace to get the feel that they are going for.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I find that one of the most challenging practices as a business owner is to analyze each interior I design and each client experience that I offer to see how I can continue to improve, regardless of how small a bump in the road in either area may have been. Although it is very beneficial to see the good, also, recognizing past challenges is often what really keeps us progressing.
