We were lucky to catch up with Gimelys Barrera recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gimelys, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve always been a bit jittery, struggling to put myself out there due to fear of failure. Art has been my passion for as long as I can recall, but the feeling of failure always lurks in the background, clouding my existence. It’s a natural fear, but you eventually learn to just say “f it” and go with the flow. Having a supportive outlet can be your greatest weapon especially in these trying times.
Gimelys, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I wouldn’t claim I’m a pro; in fact, I’m continually discovering new things of this industry. My approach has been steady while keeping an open mind, while nurturing my passion. It’s crucial to remember that pushing too hard can extinguish that flame of love for one’s craft. A primary dream of mine is to transition into a full-time artist, to thrive off my creations without having to worry about finances or food on my plate. Fun fact not a lot of people know this about me but I want to be able to have my own home that belongs and own 2 chow chows.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
It was of recent years that I began vending at artist alley one thing in particular I wished I understood more of before was navigating vendors, product and financial management. There is this weird stigmatism with sharing vendors for products, listen I get wanting to keep the company secrets but at the same time we all start some where sharing ones resources can help the community greatly.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a creative it feels like a supper power. Your brain just operates in a whole other way, I love being able to include my input in projects where my mind just takes over with a mountain of ideas.
