We recently connected with Gillian DiPofi and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gillian, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I grew up in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. Home is a very important feeling for me and every time I go back, I am overcome with feelings of nostalgia. In the last few months, I have created a series of paintings that showcase places I frequented while growing up in that area. They all have a special place in my mind and I am always writing down new places to paint.
Gillian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been interested in art and was very much encouraged by friends and family to pursue it. I graduated from Lake Erie College in May 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, concentration in Visual Arts. Since graduating college, I have gone back and forth teaching art but my main career has been working in libraries. My current job is in a Children’s Department and it has been very fun incorporating my artistic side into my professional work. I have done a lot of displays that I have been extremely proud of.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find it to be rewarding when somebody tells me one of my pieces spoke to them. It shows me that what I’m creating is beyond me. It is also rewarding to see how my personal style of art has developed over the course of my career.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think society, in order to support artists, needs to view art as a real job. It is important to understand that art can be more than a hobby. There is a lot of hard work that creatives put into their craft.
