Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gilda DeLaCalle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gilda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Life always involves some kind of risk. In our case, we risked everything to begin a new life by moving from our native country of Cuba (currently ran under a communist regime) into the US (where American dreams happen frequently). In the US I had to decide whether to be a full time employee or a full time student. In 1996, my family arrived to the USA. My husband took over the role of maintaining the family with a $7/hour salary, while I dedicated my full time studying in order to pass the Medical Board exams and revalidate my medical license. This risk was worth it because although it takes time, it continuously rewards me and my family till today. We currently own 3 Medical Centers, provide many services, and perform many procedures for patients in need. We have expanded our services to dental care, and currently operate a fully functional dental facility.
Gilda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Doctor Gilda M. DeLaCalle, I am a family physician that has been practicing medicine for more than 15 years (since 2004). I got into the medical industry because of the passion and desire I have to treat patients and make them feel healthy in all aspects (mentally, physically, spiritually). Some of these services we provide include diagnostic imaging modalities such as X-ray (Diagnostic/Intraoral), Ultrasound, Dental Panoramic X-ray. Other services include Bone Density Scan, Spirometry, Oximetry, as well as Complete Laboratory Analysis. Not only do we provide general medicine for the public, but we also focus on podiatry care, women’s health, as well as dental care. What makes us different from other medical providers is the strive to include all of the essential medical & dental services under one roof, including transportation. I am proud of being able to accomplish my dream of becoming a medical professional and for being able to help so many individuals, specially the senior population in Miami-Dade county.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
To be a good doctor one must be able to diagnose and treat all sorts of medical conditions by listening to our patients story. However, to be a great doctor one must go a step further and discover ways to make your patients life be better, not only on the physical health aspect but also on a spiritual level. As a practitioner I have witnessed that music can be utilized as a means of improving the patients mental state and I use it often, specially when I find a candidate that can benefit from it (I sing to my patients). I am also a very religious person, I have been a catholic all of my life and have personally experienced miracles happen day to day. I have prayed for my patients recovery, even when they are on medication, I understand that even a small prayer can benefit my patient greatly. I am a firm believer in listening to what the patient needs, and taking care of that need (even if sometimes it seems small). The most effective strategy for growing my patient base has been due to referral (word of mouth). I believe that if you provide quality services, with love and care, the seed you plant can go long ways and grow into a healthy tree. To market our company we have also utilized online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and our personal website, as a secondary method.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
To maintain our medical and dental teams morale, we have monetary incentives for the best monthly performer. As a company we always look for energetic candidates that can bring a smile to our patients. Our employees are great because they listen to our patients, and make them feel at home. Our employees are also treated like family, as we see them as much as we spend time with our blood family. We eat together, share quality moments together as well as sad moments. We use technology to make their jobs easier, we use the latest medical modalities to speed up the diagnostic process. We discover their talents and place our employees in areas where they can strive naturally. This can lessen the occasional burden that some tasks may have. Finally when we see an employee is giving great efforts and improving their skills, we raise their salary. We believe in the continuing education of our employees from learning basic English and computer skills to medical terminology and EMR system utilization.
