We were lucky to catch up with Gilbryonna Shaw recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gilbryonna , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

A mom of a newborn with absolutely no idea what to do next. The dozens of YouTube trainings and books pre-labor become a blur and it’s just you and this new little baby that depends on you for everything. Your hormones are shifting and you don’t even feel like yourself. People are calling and texting left and right ,but not to check on you . They are eager to see the baby. I remember someone saying you are a mother , you aren’t important anymore. It’s no longer about you.
Wow . When did we start normalizing that kind of trauma ?
God gave me the idea of Nü Momish when I was about 3 weeks postpartum. I was scared ,but I always knew I would make a huge difference in the lives of mothers , I just didn’t know it would be like this .
The sad part of the senerio I went through is many women have similar stories.
Some of those stories start at the hospital as soon as they have the baby . The pure disregard and the lack of support that the mother receives.
After interviewing dozens of mothers I realized mothers are a forgotten community.
Here at Nü Momish we reduce the daily overwhelm and restore the joys of motherhood. We prioritize the mom.
We do this by providing on demand support and community events.
At Nü Momish we have monthly Momish Meetups to support the mental health of mothers. We discuss topics like work life balance, relationships and more.
We also provide home care support where we help with household tasks like doing dishes , laundry and more.
This work is not only my passion . It is essential for the mothers in all communities .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At Nü Momish we serve mommas !!
We truly believe that every mother deserves a village so we provide that for her.
From community events called Momish Meetups , to in home services and even providing job opportunities for mothers who need a more flexible schedule!
One of our primary services are Momish Meetups where we build community . This is an opportunity for moms to meet other mom friends and gain support in areas they may struggle with . We talk about all the changes we experience through motherhood like how to take care of ourselves again, how to prioritize our relationships and how to balance work life .
The topics stem from conversation with individual mothers. We create safe spaces to talk about these things.
We also provide in home services. This service is called “Momma needs a hand”
We support the moms & families in home. We fold their laundry , do their dishes and even organize chaotic spaces . All of our Mom assistants are background checked , CPR certified and child care certificated . This ensures that our moms are served to the best of our abilities and safe .
Every Monday we host a IG live series called “Momish Monday” this gives mothers the opportunity to share their truths and personal experiences with their motherhood journey.
We are most proud of bringing more awareness to the challenges and transitions in that mothers go through . Our hope is that people & families start to support the mother as much as they support the child. Moms are important and they still need your help. As much as many think that we are superwomen we also appreciate moments where we can lay down our capes and regroup . When momma is well the family is well .
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We believe in creating real connections with our audience. We make sure that everyone mom or supporting family member feels welcomed , supported and seen. We do this by introducing ourselves via DM when someone follows us. We always survey our audience so we can make sure we are serving them with intention , based on their needs. Every Monday we host a IG series called “Momish Monday” this gives us an opportunity to expose ourselves to new audiences and interview a different momma. We use this data to create better programs and services. We believe in organic growth so we stray away from buying followers or attaching ourselves to popular pages just to get more followers. Social media is a great tool ,but we believe there’s nothing better than actual human connection. That is why we create community events monthly so our audience can really meet us .
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
As a black woman minority business owner I generally bootstrap (use my personal money) to fund my businesses. Although I’ve done that with all my business endeavors in the past , with Nü Momish we decided to take a slightly different approach. This service based community didn’t take as much money to start as our previous product based companies. To get the initial LLC and other startup essentials I used my own personal income. We officially launched in August 2022, within the first 3 months we’ve already competed in 4 pitch competitions and applied for several grants. As a new business owner it’s challenging to go to traditional banks for fundings . Grants and pitch competitions are great ways to fund your business without the responsibility of paying that money back . We also plan to do a crowdfunding campaign within our 6/7 month in business. This will give our community an opportunity to invest into our mission.
