We were lucky to catch up with Gil & Renee Beavers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gil & Renee, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
(Gil) Renée and I are opposites. For example, I like to go to bed early and wake up early; on countless occasions, as I am rising to begin my day, Renée is ending hers and going to bed. Entrepreneurship is one of my wife’s greatest strengths. Creativity and solving problems is who she is. However, I am an analytical mind who craves security and stability. I have worked for the government for over thirty years, and Renée has built and sold businesses for the same amount of time.
(Renée) You may wonder how Gil and I have remained married and now work together for over three decades. In my experience, relationships are like a beautiful dance practiced and performed on a small stage. There is one who choreographs and two who give the moves and music life and meaning. Both are learning; both need understanding and grace.
Both yield and consent to the steps designed by the choreographer; both are growing and changing. The yielding provides a beautiful display for all looking on as they dance together. Gil and I have learned to appreciate, accept, and embrace each other’s differences. Our differences launched us into new territory as authors, relationship coaches, and speakers. Gil and I have worked in traditional brick and mortar businesses with co-workers and daily interaction with customers and physical products.
Our newest endeavor is on the other end of the spectrum. Rich Relationships Refuge is our online relationship readiness center; we offer solutions to coldness and distance in relationships with workbooks, podcasts, and online one-to-one individual & couple’s sessions. In April 2023, Renée and I will launch our singles and couples boot camp. (Gil) Like me, you might think business is business; online or brick and mortar, you still have customers, products, and transactions, right? Wrong! (Renée) While eCommerce businesses require many of the same elements, the world wide web requires skills and training that are not intuitive or common knowledge.
Brick and mortar businesses have visible signs and storefronts that help bring in foot traffic that only cost a one-time fee. Your guest meets you, experiences your environment, and likes or dislikes your product or services. That one guest will share their encounter, good or bad, with their family and friends, leading to growth and profitability. Ecommerce businesses like brick and mortar ones need traffic and engagement. As a new online business, our biggest struggle is traffic to our website and social media. For many small businesses, all the hats and responsibility of gaining, servicing, and maintaining guests falls on one or two individuals.
Online businesses have a higher cost to gain and maintain guests and community engagement with more planning and digital marketing. Fortunately, Renée and I bring different skills and backgrounds to our new business table. (Gil) I am in IT and have strong communication, problems solving, and people skills, focusing on data, analytics, and internet security. Renée has strong verbal, and written skill and she loves people. She also focuses on web/graphic design, and development. Our combined strength is how we overcame our biggest struggle in serving single and couples on the internet. Although learning to leverage the internet and social media to help our community and grow our business is a new learning curve for Renée and I, together are learning to love our online journey.
Gil & Renee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
