We were lucky to catch up with GiGi Lucas recently and have shared our conversation below.
GiGi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
My idea of what legacy I will leave has evolved over the years. It has moved from something tangible to more of a mindset of limitless possibility.
I hope that through my example and my work, I show any one (especially young Black girls), that everything is possible and we are more than enough to accomplish it.
Also, having the courage shift gears and to do what speaks to your heart even if it doesn’t fit the narrative of what society believes is one of the most important qualities to have in life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a Florida-born world traveler and corporate “dropout” who decided to plant roots in Jacksonville Beach a little over 5 years ago.
After learning how to surf at the age of 35 in Costa Rica, I decided to combine my personal passion for the ocean with my professional experience to increase cultural and gender diversity in the surf industry through representation in media, retail offerings and in the water.
In 2018, I officially launched a nonprofit organization called SurfearNEGRA with a singular goal to #diversifythelineup by democratizing the sport to make surfing accessible to any kid, anywhere. Both SurfearNEGRA and I have already been celebrated across the industry by brands like NAUTICA and Proctor and Gamble, as well as in global media outlets such as Oprah Magazine, Surfer Magazine and The Drew Barrymore Show.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Change your relationship with failure.
I read a quote that said “Failure is not the opposite of success. But, is necessary to achieve it.”
That mentality shift has allowed my to increase my appetite for risk which has yielded results that would not have been possible if I tried to play it safe (…and be perfect).
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
As most know, relationships are everything when doing business.
But, I had to learn early on that being nice and being kind are very different things. Being kind and fair has helped me to set healthy boundaries and garner (and keep) the respect that I deserve and readily offer to others.
