We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gigi Dossey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gigi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I grew up in a home filled with Music and Jesus! My father was (and still is) the worship pastor at our church as I grew up, and he spent the majority of his career in music professionally. I have watched him play guitar, write music, and lead worship all of my life. He is the most talented musician I know, and has always been the biggest inspiration and musical influence in my life.
I have loved music more than anything since I was a kid; I was constantly singing around the house, playing piano, and listening to Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble on repeat throughout my younger years. The older I got, the deeper I dove into my love for music; I became infatuated with how to turn a melody into magic, specifically how to harmonize! I would stand in the congregation at church and purposefully only sing along with the vocalists harmonizing so I could learn how to create harmonies myself.
In middle school I became very involved in the choir at school, and ended up creating vocal arrangements for a small a cappella group I started on the side. In those middle school years I worked so closely learning how to create harmonies that were much more interesting than just the average one you think of. In my high school years, my involvement in choir grew and grew as I began to lead worship at the church. I also began to gig around town as my job beginning my senior year. These were the moments where I learned to love performing and found my sound as an artist.
Music has been a deep deep love of mine my entire life, and it isn’t very often that I meet someone who shares a love this deep for music as I do! If the question is, when did you know that you wanted to pursue music professionally, my answer would be I don’t know — the real question is, was there ever a moment that I didn’t? That answer is no, I have always known this is what I am born to do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Gigi Dossey and I am an R&B/Christian Artist out of Atlanta, GA. I have my eyes set on creating clean music that anyone can enjoy, that sounds like the R&B music that I know and love. I have spent the past 8 years around Atlanta performing cover music and actively leading worship at a few churches around town. It wasn’t until 2024 that I launched my music career into full artistry by releasing 3 singles, with a live EP and many other projects on the way for 2025. You can expect my music to be filled with all the harmonies, vocal runs, and maybe even a little jazz here and there. I hope that my music and the projects ahead can uplift and bring a smile to my listeners. As I continue to perform, produce, and create I hope to find a sound that is smooth and refreshing to listeners of Christian music.
Next up, I have a single coming out this Summer with my close friend and artist, Jamorad Keith, as well as a live EP recorded at Treesound Studios. This live EP coming up will be my biggest accomplishment to date. I am so blessed to have recorded at such a legendary studio where so many of the greats have created their own records. Keep an eye out, because it may be coming sooner than you think!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’ll never forget the first moment I heard the final master of my first single, While We’re Apart. This song is about how I felt when my husband was in basic training for the army – I wrote it in 15 minutes. This was so easy to write because every word explains that exact longing I was feeling in that moment.
This is also the first song that I wrote and produced by myself in the studio. Something about hearing all those background vocals and harmonies come together felt like the audible representation of what my brain sounds like. Often times as creatives, we can see the finish line in our mind before even one note is sung. When we are able to connect the dots and bring that original vision and feeling to life… there is nothing like it.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have heard people say, “do what you love and you will never work a day in your life”… if I am being honest, I believe that this truly is my mission. When I walk in my purpose, my stride looks a little different. My head is held high, my shoulders are back, and I may have a pep in my step or maybe even a little jig going while I walk. There is a fire in me that comes out when I am in the studio, or at the church working on choir parts, or even helping another artist work through vocals as they record. Through and through, music is what I believe comes the most naturally to me, and if there is a way that in this life I can make a living from creating, producing, singing, whatever it is, I would consider that an incredible blessing. The truth that I believe is that my God knows the desires of my heart, and may he get the glory no matter what.
