Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Giffy Pluggo . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Giffy , appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I went to a Benny The Butcher concert a couple years ago and did a meet and greet. I rapped for Benny and that led me to connecting with his management team and they invited me to perform at SXSW. At the time, I had pretty much given up on music and did it as a hobby but getting love from someone who I admire as a dope lyricist made me want to pursue rapping professionally.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born on the southside of Chicago in the Roseland area. I grew up with both my parents; however I lived with my mom in the Roseland area. I am the oldest of two younger brothers. My family always believed in education and going to college but we always enjoyed listening to all types of music. From a young age, I wrote poems and raps and when I turned 16 I started recording my first songs. I then went to college and continued rapping and put out mixtapes while I attended Illinois State University. I got a nice buzz. Once I graduated, I put out a couple mixtapes on Datpiff but I eventually began to pursue a career in education. I taught elementary and high school math. After years of teaching and working in education, I decided to take a chance and rap for Benny the Butcher and his crew and this led to me performing at SXSW and eventually getting a song with Benny. Benny also showed me love on Instagram along with several other artists. I even did a million views with another Chicago artist named Ayoo KD. I now have over 100K followers on Instagram. My rap name Giffy Pluggo came from me being gifted and me being the “plug”. Plug meaning I was resourceful and knew a lot of people. I have put out two projects. One is called “Paid Leave the Mixtape” and the other is called “Los Pluggos”. Both have received positive reviews.
How did you build your audience on social media?
First, you have to have quality pictures and videos as well as quality content. Also, working with other artists is how I gained my social media following. Whether that’s doing a feature or doing promo with artists. In addition, running paid ads is a great way to gain followers and build your brand. You also want to consistently post. This helps with tapping into the algorithm and being seen.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
You are going to make mistakes. I lost money and got scammed a couple times but I always made sure it was something I could lose that wouldn’t hurt me significantly. You have to be willing to take risk for the large reward but you have to be smart. I got scammed for 200 bucks thinking they were going to make me an animated video smh. Always look at their following and see if any verified people follow them. Also, try to always have a video call before doing any business.
