We were lucky to catch up with Ghost Bags USA recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ghost Bags , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Ghost Bags , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Ghost Bags brand is owned and operated by Thomas O’Beirne The design of our bags sets us apart from any and all other compostable bag companies. We have the strongest, thickest 13-gallon & 5 Gallon Compostable Drawstring bag in the world / free market. We based our design on mostly BAD reviews read online from multiple sources of competitors’ products. We took what worked and improved on those designs & took what was bad and eliminated the issues right from the start of the design process. We always look to make our products better than they were and the best they can be. For that, we had to go to the source- YOU! – Product quality and design are everything because, at the end of the day, it is all that matters.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
When it comes to a good strategy for gaining and keeping customers / acquiring repeat business the one thing as a business owner, I can’t stress enough is transparency. We coined the phrase (and wrote it on the box) ” We are as transparent as our bags!” Honesty and integrity are the name of the game. There’s no greenwashing from this company, and that’s a fact. We don’t even like to advertise strongly around Halloween as we do not want to be considered a gimmick. Our products are the real deal and are meant for people who are serious about the environment. The Ghost affiliation reminds the customer that our bags are meant to break down and fully decompose in a typical compost environment.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
The advertising as mentioned before took the largest toll on our company’s revenue stream. To try & help counter this issue with means other than advertising we implemented a new strategy. In my “free time,” I wrote & animated a short 32-page children’s story about a wayward Garbage Ghost that essentially creates such a mess that it’s chased from its lands and left to fight a garbage monster of its accidental creation. The Ghost discovers composting and with the newfound knowledge turns wrongs to rights fighting the great beast with its new environmental outlook on life.
