We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ghita Sadoq a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ghita thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I focus on writing and creating films that center around women, especially those whose voices are often overlooked or dismissed. My goal is to illuminate universal narratives of self-determination, self-agency, and challenging societal expectations at every turn. Through my writing and filmmaking, I aim to spotlight authentic realities that often escape attention in Moroccan cinema. The objective is to initiate a dialogue about the common challenges communities face today, with a particular emphasis on dismantling socio-economic barriers.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
While I was still in college as a Political Science major, I quickly realized that conveying a message in a way that resonates with audiences is best achieved through the powerful medium of film. Film has the unique ability to tell compelling stories that leave a lasting impact. My introduction to the industry began as a PA on John Wick 3 in Morocco, where I gained valuable insights into the art of filmmaking and storytelling. While working on various foreign production in Morocco provided valuable learning experiences, I found myself yearning for fulfillment in contributing to stories that truly belonged to my cultural context. Morocco, with its rich tapestry of cultures and identities, deserves a platform in the world of cinema. My mission as a filmmaker is to champion Moroccan cinema and provide a voice to the diverse narratives that exist within the country and within the Moroccan diaspora.
I believe in the potential of Moroccan stories to captivate and resonate globally, and I am committed to ensuring that these narratives are given the chance they deserve.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most gratifying aspect of being an artist or creative is the liberty to live authentically in one’s purpose. Operating from a creative space allows for the exploration and processing of the inherent contradictions in our world. In moments of heightened emotions, humans universally turn to various art forms- be it music, photography, film or novels- to find solace and understanding. Art possesses the remarkable ability to unite people and alleviate a sense of solitude. Having the privilege to dedicate oneself to creativity and artistic expression creates a meaningful space for healing. It not only provides a personal outlet for navigating the complexities of life, but also offers a source of connection and solace for others. In this way, the role of an artist extends beyond individual expression to become a powerful force of fostering a sense of shared humanity.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I moved to Los Angeles from Morocco just six months before the Covid pandemic. I believe my journey echoes the resilience shared by many immigrants – a daily commitment to navigate life in a foreign land, distanced from loved ones, and the familiarity of home, yet each day, choosing to stay and carve out my own path.
