We were lucky to catch up with Ghamar Waldon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ghamar, thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
As of early 2022 I was able to finally go “all-in” on my barber career. and it has been my major source of income. Now because I’m a Master Barber and work in a private suite I am able to move around the industry freely with all the skillsets have and services I offer. I’ve never liked the whole “walk In” setup at barbershops because I like to control my environment. Since my prices are a little higher than normal it allows me to give the customer exactly what they want when they want without rushing the experience. My clientele are treated with celebrity type care and they appreciate it. All my customers love the privacy and appreciate the booking system I run. Since day one I’ve made a lane for myself and I haven’t looked back.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The freedom of not being told how much your time is worth in an hour. Now this is not a shot at people who work a job but for me I just couldn’t depend on someone else’s success in a business to determine my finances. I come from a family where majority of the members all worked for someone else on a job. The idea o f someone owning their own business in my family was seen as a waste of everyone’s time or ” not how things are done”. So to me the biggest reward of using my creativity to cut hair is proving to myself that I was right and the doubters were wrong and continue to be.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my presence on social media by posting anything related to my business on all platforms and tagging my brand in whatever I do. From posting haircuts I do everyday to behind the scene photos and videos of me at the shop. I could be cleaning equipment or showing viewers my regular day leading up to my first appointment. I recently got a bigger suite so I could start interviewing my clients and other professionals in the hair industry just to check in with folks. The barbershop used to be a place of free therapy for the community and a safe zone for open conversations when people needed it. I’m just trying to bring that vibe back.
