Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gerry Rushe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gerry, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We created a documentary mini series on becoming a wrestler featuring 2 Irish Wrestling Schools.
Highlighting the coaches, trainees and owners.
It was a very rewarding experience and something I want to continue doing for those schools and other schools around the country.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I run a Wrestling and Entertainment Website and Podcast. I started out making wrestling memes on X, Then bumped into an old work colleague who had set up a Wrestling Podcast, he invited me on and my wife, who is a massive Wrestling fan, soon joined.
We spent 2 years with WrestleSlam, and while we were there we were also building our own channel. During the pandemic we came up with a few ideas and our main goal was the put as much energy as we can into highlighting the Irish Wrestling independent scene. Eventually, we went out on our own and have been busy ever since.
As the Wrestling Industry is a very niche market and because the Entertainment side of our name suggests, we wanted to also focus on Movies, TV, and Music so we began another monthly Podcast, Top Of The Pods, which we have now expanded into its own channel.
Joined by Tom Philpott from Pop Cult Pod and Phil Connolly from Deep Red Productions, we take the top 10 lists and break them down and make our own. This has been a lot of fun. We go back and watch movies or TV shows and decide which one tops our list. This a very unusual take on this Podcast.
It’s been over 1 year since we launched and, we have added some new members to the IWE family, Colin Byrne, Niall Fox, and Mark O’Brien and we were fortunate enough to be asked to become commentators for a Brand new Wrestling promotion, Hard Knox Pro Wrestling, based in Limerick. This has been a dream come true for a couple of Wrestling fans and we have loved every moment of it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It may be a cliche but a simple share on a certain piece on social media can go a long way to help any creative person who needs exposure. It cost absolutely nothing and takes a few seconds to let others know about it. For a struggling musician, film maker, artist etc something so small to you may have the biggest impact on them. The world would be a boring place without the creative arts industry.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The market for podcasts is so crazy these days it’s almost impossible to stand out.
I have given up in my head hundreds of times because I didn’t believe what we were doing was making a difference and nobody cared. But someone did, and that person gave me an opportunity that I never dreamed I’d ever do and I have never looked back
You have to give it time, be patient and keep improving on whatever it is that you are creating. The better you get at any one thing the better chances you have of standing out.
