Gerry, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
After a 40-year career as a TV network sports host/announcer, it occurred to me that it would be a very good thing if I (finally) did something to contribute to a better world. So, I fell back on my skills as a nature photographer, which became my full-time gig. I’m now dedicating my creative life to making this a better place for the world’s animals to flourish.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2013 I lost my job as a TV network sports host/announcer, which I’d been doing for 40+ years. The suits at NBC decided to go with a younger guy, who was making half what I was making at the time. After looking for another TV gig to replace that one, it became apparent to me that it was time to turn the corner, and try something new. I also desperately wanted to stay creative on a daily basis. Nature photography has allowed me to do that, as well as focus my skills on helping wild animals.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to use the photographic skills I have, and the portfolio I’m amassing, to help wild animals and their habitats
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The big lesson I had to learn was to realize that I actually could be happy without having to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. This is what happened to me after NBC let me go. It took a couple years, but learning that fulfilling myself creatively would make me every bit as happy and satisfied as pulling down a big paycheck.
