We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Germôna Sharp. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Germôna below.
Germôna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned by studying those that came before me. I research and I PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Most of the artists I see aren’t well rounded when it comes to their art or whatever lane they claim to be in because the focus isn’t on learning more and improving. It’s based on a quick “bop” or vibe, which is cool I guess but I want to create in progression. I don’t want to just make something just to say I made it.
There is nothing that I would’ve done or could have done to learn any faster than how I already have. I made mistakes in creating and performing and those times were moments where it just couldn’t have happened any different and I’m grateful for that. A lot of this business is about learning in the moment. Sometimes it’s the only way. The most essential skills I’ve always had was listening and being teachable. Retaining the right information and getting knowledge from the right people is important. The only obstacle that may have stood in the way of learning more would probably be me but not often. I usually seize most opportunities.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I got into this industry by having the desire for it. I’ve always been entertaining and a lil spunky so the outlet was art, for every emotion. I’ve been singing since I was 3 and acting and writing since I was about 12, so I always knew that I wanted to be in this world of entertainment. My grandmother is a singer and my grandfather is an actor and I’ve always been surrounded by music and dance and just everything art, so it’s definitely in me.
What sets me apart from others in my industry is my ability to know the business and study my craft. I don’t just say I’m something and can’t tell you the history of it or pull from that history to make something different. I don’t have the yearning to just want to be pretty in front of the camera or on stage. I want to actually move people with my art, I want to speak to the viewer with what I create.
I’m most proud of my growth and ability to speak up (respectfully) when I feel my art is being watered down. I have created things outside of being an actress and vocalist that will be here long after me and that is a good feeling.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think the number one struggle, in my opinion, is lacking the ability to understand that if I can’t entertain or be involved with something creative…the life in me is very dull. I absolutely have to create and move mentally. Most non creatives don’t get why or how you could subject yourself to the rollercoaster of being a performer but it’s the rush and it the void that is never filled. After one thing is done, your cup is empty again and you’re waiting on your next thrill. It’s just like someone who works in the corporate world and they want that big promotion or position that will set them up for what they have always wanted. So they work towards that and every little task is like a step towards that ultimate goal. It’s the same thing for me, it’s like a drug…my attitude changes if I’m not creating freely..
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal is to inspire and be a vessel for those who are unable to see themselves on the stage or in the credits. I want to be that light of inspiration for them.
