Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gerardo Urias. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gerardo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents taught me unconditional love, the value of health and faith, and taught me how to be strong and continue chasing my dreams.
They are truly an inspiration for me.
Gerardo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Gerardo Urias.
5 years ago, I was stuck in a very debilitating depression after a divorce, my father’s death, career and financial ruin, and major health issues. I tried antidepressants, therapy, and several healing modalities, none of which were able to lift me out of a very scary trajectory.
Then one day I ate psilocybin mushrooms and witnessed my depression vanish into thin air.
I began researching the use for psychedelics for mental health and ended up writing Taking Back My Mind: My Journey Out of Depression with Psilocybin Mushrooms, published in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic.
The book has been a great success and has helped many begin their healing journey.
I now teach workshops and classes on how to overcome mental illness of all kinds and how to optimize our health in addition to leading sacred mushroom wellness retreats in Mexico.
I am also working on a documentary about my journey to continue raising awareness for alternative medicines and therapies for mental health.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My journey has been riddled with setbacks and obstacles.
Imagine trying to publish a book in the midst of a worldwide lockdown.
Aside from the immense amount of time, capacity, resilience, patience, and determination it takes to publish a book, as the subject of the book is controversial, especially when I began writing it, I ended up losing most of the relationships I had at the time, business, personal, romantic, and even family. It is no exaggeration that I had to sacrifice everything to get to where I am. I spent months living out of my car, constantly traveling around to where I could afford to live or trade work for accommodations, and bear through the pain of losing everyone in my life.
If it wasn’t for my ongoing plant medicine healing journey and my conviction to serve the truth and the greater good, I don’t know where I would be today.
My relentless study and application of Stoc philosophy as well as putting the contents of my book to use are what got me through these trying times and continue to elevate me beyond my wildest dreams.
One mantra I repeated often during this time is, “Cold or warm, tired or well rested, despised or honored; just that you do the right thing. The rest doesn’t matter,” by Marcus Aurelius.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
My entire life, from the days I was a wandering ski bum living life on the edge, to all of the challenges, to my healing journey and beyond have been preparing me for where I am today. I am doing what I love, helping others, and in the process, continually healing myself.
My life is an absolute gift, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
