Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gerardo Munoz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Gerardo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I’ve taken multiple risks throughout my life but the biggest one so far has been pursuing Photography/Videography full-time. More than a risk, it’s been a leap of faith. I say that because although I excel in it, there was no guarantee that it would work out for me. Pursuing this dream took a lot of discipline, dedication, and passion but I’ve been lucky enough to be at the right place and right time. I had gotten laid off from my job and I had a family to take care of so it was either look for another full-time job ASAP or take this leap of faith. I decided to put all of my time and effort into rebranding my business and dedicated countless hours to marketing. Eventually, I started getting more and more clients and it became this snowball effect. I’m really excited about the future of my business as it seems like it will keep growing and I’m extremely happy that i took that leap of faith.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I downloaded Photoshop about 6 years ago and started editing there and that’s where my love for editing began. I eventually started editing pictures for my friends and other photographers and eventually, I decided to buy my first camera which was a point-and-shoot camera, and take my own pictures. I fell in love with this art instantly and I’d always practice so that I could get better. Shooting landscape shots was what interested me the most when I first started on this journey and after a couple of months, I decided to take it up a notch by shooting portraits, headshots, and even wedding shoots. I’d like to describe myself as a very well-rounded photographer and what I mean by that is that I can do a variety of different shoots and I like to excel in every single area of photography. During my time as a marketing assistant for a company called Aderans Hair Goods, I had the privilege to be able to work with many creatives including photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and professional models. It was during this time that my experience as a photographer skyrocketed and I decided to make this my career. After about 6 years of editing and 5 years of photography, I feel like I’m just getting started and I’m very excited about what the future has to offer. I am known for being a very well-rounded photographer. What I mean by that is that I feel comfortable and have experience doing a lot of different types of shoots. Some of these shoots include headshots, portraits, maternity, engagement, wedding, landscape (drone and non-drone), and family portraits. I’ve always been the type of photographer that likes to step out of my comfort zone and what better way than to specialize in multiple different areas of photography? This really sets me apart from other photographers because I can offer different types of photography services on top of editing skills. I’d say I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown as a photographer and how much I’m starting to grow as a videographer/cinematographer. I’ve been able to gain a ton of experience and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some really talented creatives within this industry.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think that the main mission that is driving this creative journey is really to create great art/content. At the end of the day, I just want to inspire others to do what makes them happy and to pursue what gives them life. Creating amazing content for me gives me reason and I want to pass that along to the future and current generation.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I started off editing and taking pictures. For me, that was my main line of work but the moment that social media went completely video, I knew I had to transition more into video work to keep not only myself or my work but my business relevant. I had to transition from being a photography-only business to both photo and video. Although I had to make that transition, it’s something that I actually enjoy doing. This actually helped me discover a new passion and I’m excited to see where creating great video work will take me.
