We recently connected with Gerardo Morales and have shared our conversation below.
Gerardo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Yes, it all started when I was attending Pasadena city College. And there I met my friends/colleagues, and we formed a band. Through that band, I learned so much, and grew as a musician. I made so many connections in the Music industry. that experience propelled me into a career of being a professional Musician.
Gerardo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a multi instrumentalist, composer, songwriter Producer. as a young teenager, I truly loved Music and began to perform with groups. And that’s a late teenager. Going to college studying classical Guitar and taking flamenco lessons privately. As a percussionist studying afro Cuban, afro Peruvian, Jazz, pop, hip-hop, Music.. I believe being versatile, has set me apart from a lot of musicians
As a classical/ flamenco Guitarist, I perform all across the country at times as a soloist, and other times with flamenco dance companies. Performing in universities, theaters, art shows, fashion shows. Weddings. Festivals. Private events.
As a percussionist/drummer I work with Latin/jazz ensembles. DJs, clubs, summer festivals mainly performing latin Latin/Jazz/R&B, hip-hop and pop music.
I am proud of how far I’ve come as a Musician, artist. Consistently learning and evolving.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Music is so powerful that it has the ability to connect, heal, and inspire people from all walks of life, cultures, religions from all around the world. Music is also a discipline. I feel to truly express yourself to the highest level, you must continue to study and grow. It’s been an honor and privileged to perform Music to learn from amazing musicians, to teach the next generation.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
When I was young, I was told that I could not make a living being a Musician/artist that I needed to find a regular job. The more they kept telling me that I could not be a professional, the more, I dedicated myself to it. Granted, things do not happen overnight. It takes time. From a very young age, I just knew that Music was gonna be a way of life for me. . I did not come from a musical family. I did not have Music lessons when I was young, but I Had Seek and find. Combined with the passion and desire to be what was in my heart, A professional Musician
