Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerard Huerta.
Hi Gerard, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After I graduated from Art Center College of Design, my wife and I moved to New York City to work as a commercial artist. I was hired as an album cover designer, the best job a kid out of school could get. After a little over a year at CBS Records I went freelance to expand into other areas of design and artwork. I continue today as a self-employed artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been hiccups which affected the entire graphics business: the recession of ’82, the tech bust, 9/11, the mortgage crisis….but the business always returns.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Aside from the many album covers and logos for music groups (ACDC, Boston, Foreigner, Willie Nelson, Blue Öyster Cult and many others) I did movie work (Bronco Billy, The Search for Spock, Coal Miner’s Daughter), many corporate logotypes (Nabisco, HBO, Arista, Eternity, Spelling Entertainment….) and magazine mastheads (Time, Money, People, Architectural Digest….). I designed and drew dials for Swiss Army Watches for 15 years.
I am happy to have had a hand in producing anything that involves letterforms.
I am known for custom artwork. I draw everything from scratch and then execute in Adobe Illustrator. In the analog world we inked, airbrushed, and did it all by hand.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Consistency and appropriateness of a design is important. After all, you are only as good as your last job.
