Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gerald Fletcher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Gerald thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission as a dog trainer is to keep dogs in happy homes and to develop well informed dog owners. I believe that with more educated owners, less dogs would be in shelters. Once my clients know exactly how to handle their dog, they’ll be able to handle every dog after and that’s what drives me. The journey of solidifying the relationship between a dog and their parents!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
How did I get into the industry, long story short is seven years I drove three hours to in retrospect a puppy mill to grab a husky that I’d gotten obsessed with seeing online. Six weeks later that same puppy got hit by a car when he ran out the door because I’d left it slightly cracked. He’d gotten cared for and ultimately his wounds heal but this lead me to the belief that I was truly responsible for something else’s life and that I couldn’t taken that responsibility lightly. This is what prompted my journey into becoming a professional dog trainer.
I offer from basic obedience to service work and most things in between with a focus on the latter. I also offer board and train options for the more difficult cases! No products are sold in my programs because every thing comes included. I believe the number one problem I help solve for my people is how to build that highly functional relationship with their dogs, where their dogs truly understand them.
I’m most proud of my ability to help the fearful and/or aggressive cases that I get. It’s no better feeling than opening up a fearful dogs eyes to the world and teach them that there’s more to life than loud sounds and to allow space and time for their happiness to flourish.
I would like people to know that what separates me from the pack is my commitment to the process of building that relationship. If you want your dog to pay attention at the mall then let’s do it! At the airport? Let’s do it! There’s not many places we can’t help strengthen that relationship.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As I earlier mentioned the reasoning to myself becoming a professional dog trainer was my husky puppy at the time getting hit by a car. This prompted me to start training him.
The other part of that story, which is infinitely more sad is that four months later I’d hit and killed a dig with my car that had run out into the street. I’m crying and the family’s crying and as we’re rushing this dog to the vet, all I could think about was my husky and that this could have been him. That night I decided I was going to do it professionally.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has mostly been in the west county mall. I bring my dogs there and people are always happy to see them. They’re unfortunately walking advertisements for well trained dogs. Hey, they have to pay these bills somehow!
