We were lucky to catch up with Gerald Conyers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gerald , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
One thing I do differently than others in my industry/ niche is create small rugs. The average rug maker typically make larger 4 foot rugs or even larger to add more detail. While it’s super cool at the end it typically takes way longer production time to get rugs to completion that way. So I realized that making a standard size of 3ft rugs or smaller allows me to make triple the rugs the average rug maker makes in just a few days. Which helps me be more consistent than your average rug artist. I can say confidently, I make the most rugs consistently out of any other rug maker large or small I’ve ever seen on the net. It’s strategy & not to mention I get to add more reps to my rugs skills since it’s not taking me weeks to complete 1 project.

Gerald , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Gerald “Gee” Conyers & I am an expert rug maker who found the niche of rug tufting 4 yrs ago on TikTok. I tried my hand at it a couple years later when I had enough money to Invest in the equipment. I wanted to try my hand at it since I’ve always been a creative person & my love for anime made me want to explore making anime rugs! I made 150 rugs before I can say I was confident to sell my 1st rug. I’ve been making rugs for 2-3yrs now & my socials have exploded since then. I have 19k followers on Instagram / 6k subs on YouTube / 6k followers on TikTok so far & lately I’ve been gaining traction on all platforms. I average over half a million views every month on socials for the last year & a half. My work is smaller than the average rug maker’s but just as impactful since it’s clean carving methods I use stand out. I most notably work with Kai Cenat, Justin Silvia, & a ton of local New Haven businesses & brands. I plan on using my love for rug making to connect the CT area & bring awareness to its businesses !

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by watching a ton of content in my rug niche to see what’s popular. Then, I researched the biggest creator in my nice & studied what worked for them & what makes me stand out. Then I combined all pieces of inspiration from the top 3-4 creators i found in the rug making world. Finally, I tapped into my audience one comment at a time. I’d make a rug & ask them what rug I should create next. They would comment & then I’d choose a comment & turn that into a rug for free. Not everyone has money to buy a rug in this economy, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy my work & personally feel connected .

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew how important viewer familiarity was earlier. People aren’t just going to remember you even if you have great work. There is a reason why Disney channel created personal sets for each show back in the 90s & 2000s. It’s a method I’d like to call, “Building the stage”. In other words, I’ve created a same scene environment in my content “grass wall with neon @ sign about my head for the videos” & “grass flooring for product photos of my rugs to show contrast of my work” these to things are essential in viewer retention. Like if someone doesn’t know my @ name they can just type in stuff like “dude that makes the rugs grass wall” or grass floor rug maker” & my content could have more possibilities to be found based off the “stage” I’ve set for it.
