We were lucky to catch up with Geovanny & Johnnie Ragsdale recently and have shared our conversation below.
Geovanny & Johnnie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My wife, Geovanny, became gluten sentative about 10 years ago. After exhausted testing and selective fasting she found herself saying no to bread. In 2019 we tested artisan sourdough and found she didn’t have the same reactions to this syle of homemade bread. She was very excited to know she could once again enjoy fresh bread. In 2020, I asked her…”do you think we could make this a business?” Then when the pandemic hit a month later this thought started to become a reality. As a professional massage therapist myself, I could no longer work when the State of California closed all massage practices. We started by testing the product with family and friends and they loved it too. A friend helped us create our logo and branding. Geo, developed the processes and we were off. Officially we launched in June after being licensed by the County of Ventura and the City of Simi Valley. Since launching our business our mission has been providing high-quality wholesome baked goods from our oven straight to your door.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Johnnie is a therapeutic massage therapist by profession. He has developed a love for baking good bread and trying new fusions. Some friends jokingly say, “Johnnie just needs to knead something.”
Geovanny, is a non-profit executive. She has served as a business consultant with the SBDC of the Inland Empire n the early 2000’s. Has developed and grown a number of non-profit organizations around Latin America and Europe which focused in teaching the free enterprise system. As a first generation American she has seen first hand how the principles of business through free enterprise can lift families out of poverty. Over the years Geo has enjoyed creating cookies and simple cakes as Johnnie doesn’t like frosting, now they share those with the community.
Johnnie and Geovanny met in Springfield, MO and married in 2009. They spent almost 10 years in Chattanooga, TN before moving to Geo’s home state of California.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
We are extremely thankful to our customers who shared their experience with others on Facebook and Instagram.
We will also say, being a member of our local Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce has been helpful.
There are many programs to support small businesses. We were blessed by SCORE Ventura. We were paired with a past baker who gave us advice on how to price our products and mange our production.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We are currently working our resilience. Back in November 2022 we moved. At that time, we didn’t realize how hard the move would be for us. We had to get all of our county and city licenses and permits redone under the new home.
We reassessed what products we would retain and how we would structure our subscribers’ deliveries.
At moments it feels like we are starting over. We trust that the community will continue to enjoy our fresh wholesome products straight from our oven to their door.
