Georgina , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The world of theater is indeed enchanting, captivating audiences with its spellbinding performances and awe-inspiring transformations. From the moment the curtain rises to the final bow, the magic of theater comes alive through the art of costume, hair, and makeup.
As a child, I was drawn to the theater like a moth to a flame. The allure of the stage and the remarkable ability of actors to transport us to different worlds fueled my imagination. But it was the backstage world that truly captured my heart. The moment I discovered that the performers, who had just captivated me with their performances, were without their stage personas, I was in awe.
Behind the curtains, a team of talented professionals work tirelessly to bring the characters to life. The costume designers meticulously craft every garment, paying attention to the smallest details. From the elegant gowns of a period drama to the fantastical costumes of a musical, each piece is carefully chosen to reflect the character’s personality and enhance the storytelling.
Hair and makeup artists work their magic, using brushes, powders, and pigments to transform actors into their on-stage alter egos. They create intricate hairstyles, from elaborate updos to wild and untamed locks, perfectly suited to the character’s time period, social status, or personality. Makeup is applied skillfully, enhancing facial features, adding age or wounds, or creating fantastical creatures from another realm.
As an adult now fortunate enough to work behind the scenes, I value and appreciate the incredible work that goes into creating this backstage magic. I have witnessed firsthand the passion and dedication of the costume designers, the meticulous attention to detail of the hair and makeup artists, and the collaborative efforts of the entire production team. It is a symphony of talent and creativity, all coming together to bring a story to life.
The transformation that takes place backstage is not just physical, but also emotional and psychological. Actors step into their costumes, slip into their characters, and become vessels for storytelling. The power of costume, hair, and makeup is undeniable, as it allows actors to fully embody their roles and transport audiences into the world of the play.
Being part of this backstage magic is a privilege. It is witnessing the culmination of countless hours of hard work, creativity, and teamwork. It is being part of a tradition that has spanned centuries, where the art of theater continues to captivate and inspire. And it is a reminder of the power of storytelling and the ability of theater to touch hearts, provoke thoughts, and create moments of pure magic.
The art of costume, hair, and makeup is a crucial element in bringing characters to life and creating a truly immersive experience for the audience. As someone who values and appreciates this backstage magic, I am grateful to be part of a world where imagination knows no bounds and where the power of transformation is celebrated.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a costume designer, my passion for researching different periods in fashion, history, and cultures allows me to create captivating characters through clothing. My profession is a unique blend of artistry and storytelling, where each costume I design contributes to the narrative of a production.
My journey in the world of costume design has taken me to various corners of the globe. I began my career in London, working on theatrical productions that allowed me to delve into the rich history of costume design. The vibrant theater scene of London provided me with ample opportunities to create visually stunning costumes that brought characters to life on stage.
Seeking new experiences and challenges, I decided to move to Macao. This move not only exposed me to a different cultural milieu but also allowed me to expand my horizons as a costume designer. Working in Macao, I was able to explore the unique fusion of Chinese and Portuguese cultures, which influenced my design aesthetic and added depth to my repertoire.
More recently, i made the bold decision to relocate to Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world. This move opened doors to exciting opportunities, allowing me to work on projects ranging from film to television. Los Angeles provided a vibrant and diverse creative community, offering me a platform to showcase my talent and collaborate with industry professionals.
One of the highlights of my career was being asked to be a part of Beyoncé’s wardrobe crew on her world tour, Renaissance. This incredible opportunity not only validated my skills as a costume designer but also allowed me to work with one of the biggest names in the music industry. Collaborating with Beyoncé and her team, I was able to contribute to the visual spectacle of her performances.
Through my dedication and passion for costume design, I continue to evolve and grow in my profession and bring characters to life on stage and screen.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It means that I can do what I love.
Being able to contribute to the canvas of movie making alongside other artists is a huge honour and I am so grateful.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Yes it’s a challenging path to be an artist.
Freelancing can mean their are times that financially may be uncertain, but for me, it makes you stronger and more driven.
