We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Georgie-Ann Neil a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Georgie-Ann, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Every day you wake up and decide to get out of bed, you take a risk. One of the most significant risks I took was to follow my dreams. I know it sounds cliché, but I decided to go against family traditions and pursue my purpose a few years ago. I decided to get out of bed and do something different. I got tired of living in a box!
I had already achieved a few milestones in my life, my master being one of them, but sitting behind a desk day in and day out became tedious and redundant. I wanted more. So, I decided to pursue my Ph.D. and start my own editing company.
Sharing my vision with persons in my close circle became disheartening as the discouragement grew. No one understood what I was describing. So, I went through a phase where I believed the naysayers. I allowed their words to bury my vision. It was not until a few years later that I woke up from a dream and decided to take the risk to passionately and purposefully position myself to walk in purpose. I began to conduct my research, fill out the applications, calculate the fees and do some networking. Finally, I decided to move in silence.
After getting accepted into the Ph.D. program and launching my editing company, my accomplishments became public, and my circle became smaller. But, though the process hurt, I didn’t give in. I didn’t let go, and I didn’t give up! Instead, I decided to risk it all so that I could walk in the freedom of building generational wealth for my family.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
After editing their work, I had to unlearn that I could satisfy every client. Editing can offend people. Entering the editing business, I thought that every client had some knowledge about writing and that they would be pleased with the editing services I provided.
I recall submitting the first round of edits to their manuscript to a client. It took me longer than expected because it was a hard edit. However, after the client received and reviewed the manuscript, they immediately requested a meeting with me to challenge what I did. After a long debate, I explained the editing process to the client. This experience also allowed me to consult with my clients about the editing process before working on their projects.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
To be successful in any field, you need mentorship. Having someone to be accountable to is essential. In addition, it allows room for growth and sustainability.
