We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Georgia Starnes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Georgia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I always knew watching other artists growing up that I would and could do the same for my job and I’ve been pursuing it since the first talent show I did in kindergarten. I also participated in recital dance for my younger years and then competitive cheerleading for 4 years I truly enjoyed the performance aspect and would sing in the bathrooms backstage. I knew I wanted to entertain people. It turned on my spark to be on stage- fueled my fire and felt right. I specifically remember singing the whole cheer routine song, which was a compilation edit of a ton of songs, with my whole heart while doing the cheer routine on stage.
Georgia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Pop/R&B artist born and raised in Dallas, TX and a graduate from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. I recently made a splash in the music scene with my single Symphony, released in January 2019. My music fuses a unique blend of pop & contemporary R&B to create my own brand of the genre that I call Glitter Soul, and my vocal styling is inspired by artists such as Jazmine Sullivan, Rihanna, Erica Badu, and others. I have been blessed to experience life lessons at an early age and has been able to reflect them in my music. My songwriting touches on deep issues such as love and relationships, break ups, heartbreak, growing pains, domestic violence, and witnessing family and friends struggle with addiction.
For my latest release “Think With My Heart ( TWMH)” I have teamed up with Grammy award winning producer Shalom “J.Storm” Miller, who has worked with some of the most iconic music acts such as Beyonce, Missy Elliott, and Gwen Stefani. I am a young woman discovering the ups and downs of life, love and learning for the first time that blind love is not always true love.
Think With My Heart sets up the plot for future songs that share the rollercoaster story of my growth as I evolve from a “good girl gone bad” to hopefully eventually reaching redemption.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to connect to others in a universal way. No matter how old you are, what you look like, where you are, you can feel music. Music has been a constant source of energy in my life since I can remember. I’ve always felt transported through singing and to a good song. I enjoy being able to share that energy back to people. I do write about real experiences too. We all have more similar stories than most would think. In addition to music, I remember drawing for my friends as early as 4th grade and feeling like I was gifting them with something. Art in all forms has always come naturally to me and I practice it in someway everyday. It’s my emotional release.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After high school, I really wanted to be in a college program that aligned with my career goals – being a popstar! I found a program, Popular Voice, at USC. I did make it all the way to the in person callbacks but ended up not getting in. In the span of 2020, I did get signed to a modeling agency and ended up moving to my dream city, Los Angeles. I gained a lot of experience and grew more than I ever imagined to. I was able to build real life connections and the freedom of time left me more creative and motivated than ever. I was blazing my own trail. I will be moving back to Los Angeles this summer to continue pursuing music, modeling, acting, and artistry overall.
