We recently connected with Georgia Nubia and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Georgia, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I quit my full time retail job to pursue my creative career. Of course, it’s been a very different journey but it’s truly worth it. I have been able to test and push my artistic abilities beyond my own expectations and have created more income for me. I now teach children Self Expression through Creative Arts sharing my gifts of photography, poetry, painting, and even designing jewelry. I share a poem with them daily “I think I can, I think I can, I KNOW I can, I can!!!! It’s my way of expanding my dreams because many adults ask for help but aren’t willing to make the changes needed to grow, I don’t have to argue with children about learning something new or simply trying something new…. Well sometimes because they’re like “But why Ms. Georgia?” So we talk about how I changed my life and what gifts they already have within them! It’s the most fulfilling thing I have ever done and I am thankful I am in a position to give back and speak life into the community starting with the kids!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Georgia Nubia! I am a certified art dealer in South Carolina. I am from Macon, Georgia where many other legends reside. I have been creating since I was a child, more poetry and photography then but poetry has always been the main way of self expression I love the most, I moved to Charleston in 2016 to be a poet, taking a huge risk because I came with a few dollars and a vision and I’m extremely happy, it’s working out for me. It’s hard though, really hard because sometimes filling the 24 hours with actual work may be the breaking point because even the most creative person gets bored sometimes. It’s also difficult when the people around you aren’t supportive like you need them to be but there’s a stress that comes with everything so I believe you should only do the things you love. With my photography, I like to remind people of their power so I have “Crowned by Georgia” where I give you the crown and we talk about how we as black people have always been black art and walking royalty. The way everyone responds to that is breathtaking, they literally feel more confident leaving the shoot and have a deeper insight on who they are. My artwork is my way of channeling anger into something greater, and my poetry is the inspiration for myself and many others, I speak life, I create life, and I give back to the children because they need to know, I can do this too. I prayed for children and ended up being a teacher, I’ll take it!!! My business continues to exceed far beyond my expectations and I am thankful someone told me to “Work my gifts’” because now I can share that with everyone I meet and that’s my goal! To change a life, one thought at a time because if you can think it, you can do it.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me has been selling my artwork across America! I have sold my artwork and books to people in places I’ve never been. Another thing is watching the people I know start to work their gifts too and change their lives to be who they should be because that’s really scary to do and sometimes it’s not accepted to be yourself although it’s heavily promoted and pushed to do
And watching the fruit from the seeds of faith I planted grow. I am absolutely proud of myself

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
T Shirts!!!! I create custom T Shirts but that was never in my plans! My mentor passed away in 2020 and left a heat pressing machine for me. He always a said making custom t shirts was quick money and it saved me many times when my other services got really slow. I was able to take bulk orders for other entrepreneurs and put my poetry on t shirts so I can actually survive, those t shirts paid my bills for at least 3 months but I had no idea I would need to put in that type of work, but I’m glad I had the equipment to start something new. Now I have an extra income and new knowledge on making designs!!
