We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Georgia McClintock a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Georgia, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
As a multimedia business owner, I get asked this question a lot, “Would you have started your business differently?” The answer is, “Yes!” I would have learned and practiced moving in silence quickly. One of the things I hear all the time is that the equipment, for photography and videography, is too expensive. I tell new business owners, “For your birthday or Christmas, tell your family and friends to get you monetary gifts. Don’t tell them why you want them as a gift. Those gifts are an investment into your business.” A speaker at a small business workshop I attended said, “It is important for small business owners to be very conservative with their money and resources.” This is a true statement.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My love for music and my energetic personality led me to become a radio entertainer. I started interning at local radio stations right after high school. I was extremely eager to learn about the radio industry. Once I graduated from college, during the recession, reality set in. I could not find a job in radio broadcasting. My husband, my boyfriend then, encouraged me to create my own radio show. As Sophya D Radio was growing, it was time to birth the Sophya D Network for photography and videography. I am grateful that I graduated during the recession. I was pushed to show my creativity and innovative side as an independent entertainer. I have no desire to go back into corporate radio. I love that I own Sophya D Network and Sophya D Radio. I have the authority to make my own rules and regulations. I can dress how I like to and still represent my own brand.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my business partner in college. Yes, my husband is my college sweetheart. He already had his business, TS Creations. After we started dating, we realized that we were meant to be each other’s support system with our businesses. If I have a booking, he is my camera B and vice versa. We work very well together. Many clients book us because we are a husband and wife team.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I always enjoy my client’s reactions when they see the final product. When I interview an artist or business owner, I always speak life into their creativity or business. The interviews are preparing our guests for a bigger platform. I am always amazed at the growth after their interviews.
Something happens to my female clients after I complete a photography session. These women get a boost of confidence. I always want my clients, male or female, to feel comfortable around me and embrace the different poses while in photography sessions. Again, I speak life into my clients. I remind my clients of the beauty that they have and to take ownership of God’s creation.
