We were lucky to catch up with George Simpson recently and have shared our conversation below.
George, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I began podcasting in 2018. I had no clue how to do it. I thought it was just talking. Ah man I was wrong. I had to learn to project my voice. When to speak and when to be quiet. Don’t over share to the point of you run out of things to say. The right equipment to use. Everyone mimics the shows that are out before them. I was no different. Then I found out it’s all environmental. What room you’re in and how sound bounces. Studying people’s reaction and anticipating responses. There is a science to it all. Now 5 almost six years later I have over 700 recorded episodes under my belt.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well, I began my content creating journey in 2013 after a Suicide attempt. I began to realize life was bigger than myself. I started to speak about myself more and sharing my life. I started creating mental health post. Then I started a mental page called Jester’s Lighthouse where I created a safe space for people to talk about their mental health. I also got in-tuned with the pop culture and current events of the world and began to make memes about that. I built a good following over 118k followers before Instagram took my page down. I did that for five years and transitioned into podcasting. I Been building that up for a while. Not ever leaving my roots of content creating. I took the tools I learned there and use them in podcasting. Making cover art, websites, etc. I’m proud of the progress over the years. I work so hard to create. Because I am truly happen to be here. Because I almost wasn’t here.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A huge lesson I had to unlearn was doing things on my own. I have to ask for help when I need it. I own a podcast network and for the first year and a half I ran it alone. I ran myself into the ground. Wasn’t even recognizable to my friends and family. Now I have a great team with me. Shoutout to Christian Kearson, Natasha Adams, Leo Ráchel, and Gary Temoney for being here on this journey with me. Without them I truly don’t know where I would be. Also my beloved sister Abernathy Wright. She was my first personal assistant before I knew I needed one.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To bring the arts back. I am a theater kid. I joined the drama club in 9th grade and it kept me out of trouble. I am a former gangbanger and I had not a great home life. So all I had was sports, the streets, or drama. I played football until I got injured. Tried the streets and began to lose a lot of my friends. So I turned to drama club. Did plays and performances. My specialty was pantomime. It truly saved my life. Now I want to help someone else.
