We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful George Redd Speaks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with George below.
George , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since I was a kid. I lived in Lubbock Texas, about half a mile away from TV Station FOX KJTV34. Back then we only had 4 or 5 channels. On FOX is where they would play all the cartoons. So I literally thought that’s where the cartoons were made. Against my parents direction. I rode my bike there.
When I walked in the lady looked at me surprised and asked,”may I help you?” I said “yes, I’d like to see where you make your cartoons please.” She laughed, and said” let me get someone to show you around.
A nice man came out and gave me a tour of the news station, green screen and the production room. Looking at the cameras and lights. He explained to me that they didn’t make cartoons there, and how they made money off sponsors and ads.
I knew right then I would be in entertainment. Never told my parents, but I’d get excited when they would see the news. I had been there. Saw behind the curtain and I was hooked.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I first started writing music when I was about 13. Not till I was 16, I recorded my first song. Then pursued it till I was 23. Learning business, but leaned more into producing live performances. Then went on to radio, and television.
My real passion hit me when I found Stand Up Comedy. First time off stage at the House of Blues. I was completely in love. Then I learned how develop my craft over time. And build a network. Off I went, and I will not stop for nothing or nobody.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Sure, my real name is Jorge Rojas, but I got in trouble by the law. I became an outlaw and on the run. So I changed my name to English to George Redd plus I spoke for a living, added the Speaks. Just to throw them off a little.
Then I finally turn myself in, did prison time. I read every book on comedy. I was able to hold comedy sessions in prison. Completely focused. Had plans to move to New York when I was released. Crazy thing is when I got out it was on March 25th 2020 Covid lock down began.
It was hard, but once things opened up, I was ready and hit the floor running. Haven’t skipped beat yet. Just like everybody, life hits and when it hit it hurts. You just got to stay on the path and move forward..

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Well my mission and goal is to be a better comedian. I never compete with others. I only compete with myself to be a better performer then I was yesterday. Also a passion of mine is to to help others develop, and be successful in this industry.
That’s why I created Comedy Junkie Society, and The Texas Comedy Connection. To create opportunities, and expand this beautiful thing of ours we call Comedy. Over all I want to connect with the audience, and with my comedy community.
