Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to GeorgAnna Wiley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
GeorgAnna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I noticed women dread their gyn exam, yet need one every year. I helped a woman with pelvic pain so severe she had avoided sex for years, and like half of America, used the ER for gyn care. She felt safe enough with me to disclose being raped as a 3 year old child, and I realized I was the only person (not to mention the only healthcare provider) to ever ask if she had past trauma, a neglected but huge part of chronic pelvic pain. I gently did the pap smear she had avoided for 30 years, because she was scared it would hurt. She cried with relief that my touch didn’t hurt, and now trusts me and sends her mother, sister, and daughters to see me for care – I can think of no bigger compliment. Seeing this over and over for decades inspired me to launch Rebirth. I thought I was a magnet for helping women heal from trauma until I realized its something that has affected most of us, and few have ever had anyone offer to help them heal.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m GeorgAnna Wiley, CNM, MSN, APRN, WHNP, BSN, BA, CPM of Rebirth Holistic Women’s Health, and I invite you to join my revolution of women loving their vaginas. I’d like you to pause and notice sensations arising in you when I say “vagina”. Is there tension? Discomfort? Disgust? Why do we feel shame around our bodies, and hesitate to use the correct anatomical term? Half the world has a vagina, the other half probably came out of one, so why do we feel weird?
I use my 20+ years experience as a medical provider to address this with Rebirth – my boutique medical practice that’s more like a cozy lounge than a doctors office, where I blend natural and mainstream gyn and primary care focused on our marginalized, underserved, un/underinsured women or those dissatisfied with mainstream care. I offer sexual counseling, next day gyn care, 30-90 min visits, annual exams, pap smears, pregnancy prevention, fertility augmentation…. but also help women physically release shame, guilt, pain, fear, and the residue from abuse which 1 in 3 women has experienced, so they can rewrite their inner narrative to one of self-love, and truly love their bodies, which many struggle with. I also balance hormones and neurotransmitters, offering an alternative to throwing pills at women to help with stress, anxiety and mood issues stemming from chronic overwhelm and burnout. I cofounded Allies For Healing, a nonprofit to help human trafficking survivors and prevention in at risk youth. I was voted “best midwife” by Connect readers, and “top 3 Gyn providers in the lowcountry 2022” by Savannah Morning News. Find me at rebirth.health or @happy vaginas on social media.
Let’s normalize loving yourself.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Compassion, empathy, non judgement, and listening skills. So many women feel unheard, and providers don’t take time to listen. Women know their bodies! Until we walk in each others shoes, there is no place for judgement in the world.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My greatest professional honor is women referring their mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends to me. I am grateful to be able to give women a space they feel safe and heard, and respect their ability to trust me with their most intimate concerns that are so often hard to talk about. So I feel the best strategy for growing your clientele is to listen to clients and help them feel safe and supported. Any provider who truly does this will earn respect in our community.
