We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Geoffrey Calhoun a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Geoffrey, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
When I first started screenwriting, the industry was tough—brutal, even. I sought feedback from so-called experts and professional screenwriting gurus of the time, hoping for insightful notes to help me improve. Instead, I was hit with harsh, personal attacks. I was told I didn’t have what it takes and that I should quit. It was nothing short of bullying, and to make it worse, I had actually paid for this “advice.”
But I didn’t give up. I pushed forward, diving deeper into the craft because screenwriting is my passion. It’s how I express myself artistically. I may not be able to sing or dance, but I can write a killer script. Eventually, I built up the courage to enter contests, and before long, I was winning them everywhere. My journey took me from LA to London.
At one festival, I met a director who was struggling with their script. I offered my help, giving notes and helping them break the story. Word spread, and soon enough, I was surrounded by filmmakers eager for my feedback. They appreciated my collaborative approach—working with them to improve their scripts, rather than tearing them down. That experience inspired me to create wefixyourscript.com, where I now mentor writers, provide thoughtful notes, and rewrite scripts for producers and directors in the industry.
And those screenwriting gurus who told me I’d never make it? Well, I’ve got films on Lifetime, Streaming, and a Theatrical release.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Geoffrey D. Calhoun, host of The Successful Screenwriter podcast and founder of WeFixYourScript.com. My journey into screenwriting began with a love for storytelling and a drive to create compelling narratives that resonate with audiences. However, breaking into the industry was far from easy. I faced rejection and harsh criticism, but my dedication to the craft never wavered. Over time, I honed my skills, won several screenwriting contests, and had my work produced and featured on platforms like Lifetime and Tubi.
Through these experiences, I realized there was a significant gap in the industry—aspiring screenwriters needed more than just feedback; they needed guidance, mentorship, and support from someone who truly understood the challenges of the craft. This realization led me to create wefixyourscript.com, a platform where I work closely with writers, producers, and directors to help them develop their scripts. At wefixyourscript.com, I provide a range of services, including script consultation, rewrites, and mentoring. What sets us apart is our collaborative approach—I work alongside my clients, offering constructive feedback that empowers them to bring their stories to life, rather than tearing down their work.
In addition to my work at wefixyourscript.com, I also host The Successful Screenwriter podcast. The podcast is a platform where I share insights, tips, and interviews with industry professionals, all aimed at helping screenwriters navigate the often challenging landscape of the entertainment industry. My goal with the podcast is to provide actionable advice and inspiration for writers at all levels, whether they’re just starting out or looking to elevate their careers.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built around The Successful Screenwriter. It’s not just about sharing knowledge—it’s about fostering a supportive environment where writers can learn, grow, and succeed together. Whether you’re tuning in to the podcast, seeking script consultation through wefixyourscript.com, or engaging with our community on social media, my mission is to help you become the best screenwriter you can be.
For anyone considering working with me, following my podcast, or just interested in screenwriting, I want you to know that I’m here to support your journey. I believe in the power of storytelling, and I’m committed to helping you find your unique voice in the industry. Whether you need help polishing a script, breaking into the business, or simply finding motivation, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my reputation within the industry has been built because I look at my clients as partners who I am deeply invested in seeing succeed. In the world of screenwriting, collaboration is key, and I take pride in being fully committed to helping my clients develop their stories, refine their scripts, and achieve their creative goals. This collaborative approach creates a strong bond of trust and mutual respect, which ultimately drives success for both my clients and myself.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
I used to think NFTs were an interesting potential for investment, especially with the unique opportunities they presented for digital ownership and creativity. However, my perspective shifted when I found several companies trying to build NFTs around my company. That’s when I realized that this market can be rather predatory, with significant potential for scams and exploitation. While NFTs might still have a place in certain contexts, my experience has made me more cautious and critical of their use and the ethics surrounding them.
