We recently connected with GENUWINE Beauty and have shared our conversation below.
GENUWINE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I started professionally at 21 my first ever music showcase in Virginia. I started recording at 17. only i knew then i wanted to see what the music business really had to offer. at the time it was only limited clubs that allows 18+ so i waited till i was 21 to really hit the music scene. my music manger at the time put me thru the ring of fire. My first performance I got booed off the stage. my music manager didn’t really prepare me for my first showcase.
GENUWINE, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
before I really got into the music entertainment business I used to do club security and was a house party dj. I wanted more to deal with the music Entertainment business in general. so at the age of 23 I started my first label called sound movement Entertainment. I had a group of 10 artist coming straight out of high school. my team was unstoppable. at the time I anit really know bout contracts I was built off of loyalty. then my old management got ear of what I was doing and broke my label up. so after my first label I did I started working on my independent music career. I couldn’t take no for a answer at the time. I was doing everything from security to dj to evening interviewing underground artist around my neighborhood. then around the age of 26 is where I moved to Atlanta to start living my truth of my womanhood. I had met a label dealing with trans individuals called trans Entertainment network. it didn’t go as I wanted. i was always in and out of jail. so my career couldn’t really take off. I was a type of person no matter how big or small the opportunity is I was willing to take risk to get where I needed to get going. so after my incarceration in Atlanta. I went back home to va. 3 months later it was giving a repeating cycle of in and out of jail so I took a risk move to move to nyc to further my career. and I did just that. my early years here in nyc I have mad it to spin magazine to the power 105 interview to myhiphopperiod.com blog to the dj drama blogs. my career was taking off.me from being the first trans female artist to be in all female mixtape 2. to celebrity’s respecting my music career. in year 2020 I found a platform called MORBOOKINGS which CEO is ran by scott morris. I was a client at the time before I joined the behind the scenes part of this music industry. a year later I become full staff of the MORBOOKINGS team. this year of 2022 we have recently started partnering with the label quality control. my job at MORBOOKINGS is very important I handle the bookings for artist of our shows. I help facilitate shows. make sure the artist are comfortable at our shows. I still have a business to run as well called lolipopguildgangent. I started lollipop for the small people that always got over looked or a voice that wasnt hurd. I was always one of those people I had to work harder because of the community I am apart of.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
yes change for more unified place for people who are different or not popular in the music scene. I’m tired of the hiphop politics of who’s hot who’s not. or which demographic of people belongs in hiphop and who dont. being a public figure for the small people has always been my top drive. but most importantly I like life challenges. I’m my LGBTQ+ community most people look as me as celebrity. I look as my self as a average Joe who knows the business from my trials and errors. I just recently created my own genre dealing with video game and anime rap called the maegenre. being original and not following trends has always been my go to of succeeding ahead.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
controlling your own path and success. everyone always go for the big goals like getting signed or become rich and famous. me on the other handle I praise the the small and major opportunities that’s comes my way. alot of us artist always for get the small steppingstones of our major goals that we want to accomplish. success to me is completed goals and task that you set your self along the way to complete your bigger main goal you are accomplishing.
