We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gentry Warren a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gentry thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I am mostly a self-taught artist. It has taken several years of trials and experimentation to get to my current style of work. I wish I would have started exploring classes by other artists sooner. I’ve found a lot of inspiration and learning by listening and watching other artists create. Even if the artists works on another medium, there are often thing that can be applied to your own practice and work. I think cost of classes and seminars has been the biggest obstacle to overcome in finding ways to further my knowledge.
Gentry , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Gentry Warren and I am a mixed media and acrylic artist. I primarily create abstract artworks and playful animals. My work is full of color, emotion, and most importantly, pieces of myself and my lived experiences. As someone who has always felt the peaks and valleys of life deeply, finding a way to create from those feelings has been and continues to be transformational for me. As with life, my process and style are ever changing. My work is full of stories and depictions of interactions and observations from every corner of the country. I deeply enjoy combining paintings with stories for the viewer to enjoy in tandem. Through my words and work, I hope to evoke understanding and compassion, while offering new perspective and vantage points.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having the ability to create another world through art and visual stimulation is extremely rewarding. Art has always provided a sense of escaping the real world for me while I’m creating. When life can be overwhelming it’s comforting to know I have art to escape in.
How did you build your audience on social media?
While my audience is still growing, I’ve found the most interaction and engagement usually comes from moments of being a raw, real human. I think it’s important that followers understand there is a real person on the other end of the account who is creating and putting themselves on the line with every post. My advice would be to be as real and unfiltered as possible from time to time so that you’re more relataeble and realistic.
