We were lucky to catch up with Genna Wigginson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Genna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned much of the fundamentals of art in grade school and college. I’ve had some incredible art teachers and instructors that’s provided atmospheres of creativity. Learning the essentials like color theory, composition, and proportion was very early on in my education. One of my favorite memories is the studio classes at MCA with bench easels, Dave Mattews band playing in the background, and a room full of artists with sporadic gazes on one composition. Knowing what I know now, I could have sped up my learning process by devoting more time beyond classes to develop my skills. I think the biggest obstacle that was in my way of learning was a limiting belief system that I had to ultimately disengage.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a visual artist based in Memphis, TN. I also work in architectural design via structural engineering. I’ve been a creative for most of my life but it wasn’t until recently that I decided to become artistically available. I started my art business in 2020 offering my original paintings at local festivals and markets. I now offer commissions and have originals available in local galleries, retail, and studios. Oversized embellished abstract paintings is what I’m typically known for and is the majority of my commissions. Id like to note that due to the highly reflective texture of my paintings, I recommend viewing and experiencing my artwork in person. Private showings is a great way to see my latest work and can be booked through my website. I don’t offer online sales, but I sometimes offer prints through third parties.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I absolutely love seeing my client’s face light up when they first put eyes on their new painting. I must say that it can be a nervous moment for me regardless of my confidence lol but its a wonderful feeling and a beautiful connection between art and collector.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can best support artists and creatives by investing in original art and artists. Our world is full of creativity but it can often be overshadowed by mass production.
