We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Genesis Shine. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Genesis below.
Genesis, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I have been passionate about creative writing for most of my life, even earning an award in the 8th grade. Around that time, I began writing my first poetry book, which I used as a diary until I turned 18, when it was unfortunately lost due to a basement leak. By then, I had also developed an interest in media and promotions, inspired by watching sports agents effortlessly articulate their thoughts during moments when I felt unheard and misunderstood.
After moving to Columbus, I sought to channel my writing and content creation skills. I connected with the ‘Alliance DJs,’ a collective of traveling nightclub and event DJs. They took me under their wing, helping me realize my talent for effective communication. This experience opened doors for me—I became a model, brand ambassador, host, correspondent, marketing account manager, and event curator, all while diving deeper into my passion for storytelling and connection. Another key factor in honing my craft has been my commitment to consistency and curiosity. I thoroughly enjoy exploring new content and communication concepts, as I believe in creating environments where brands and individuals can share meaningful experiences. To enhance my skills, I actively read, engage with, and participate in workshops that contribute to my growth.
Understanding how words and visuals evoke emotions became crucial, prompting me to take a class focused on this. I recognize the importance of diversifying the platforms I use to reach my audience, so I experiment with various outlets and frequent forums like Reddit for fresh insights. Participating in accelerator programs and maintaining a network of mentors has been essential for my ongoing development.
Initially, it was challenging because many perceived what I did as a hobby rather than a legitimate career. I sometimes shared that sentiment—I just loved discussing what I learned and sharing valuable information. Building the right social connections has helped me transform my passion into a fulfilling career. Obtaining a more formal education helped me overcome numerous obstacles. Social media was still emerging during this time, and ‘content creator’ wasn’t even a widely recognized term. I was still on a journey to discover my career identity. The breakthrough came when I was invited to teach a workshop, which led to planning an event and ultimately being hired as a program coordinator while in college. This role allowed me to translate my passion into tangible work.
As a program coordinator, I wore many hats, which enabled me to refine my skills and identify my niche: resources and engagement. Today, I concentrate on helping brands, organizations, creatives, and startups communicate effectively through strategic engagement. I do this by coaching, leading workshops, and conducting strategy sessions to empower others in presenting their brand message.”

Genesis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a passionate writer with a background in cultural anthropology and marketing. With a love for music, poetry, and culinary experiences, I draw inspiration from a rich tapestry of life experiences. Growing up in foster care and group homes, I uncovered the profound connection we all share, regardless of our differing circumstances, which shaped my interest in communication.
As a facilitator of workshops, retreats, and coaching, I empower small businesses, community programs, and creatives to strategize effective engagement processes to achieve their goals. I’ve been featured in Columbus Alive, Sohza Sister, and on WSYX Channel 6 Columbus. Additionally, I served as a global Dress for Success Spokes Model and has been recognized by Ohio Reach, Partners Achieving Community Transformation (PACT), Safe Routes to School, Columbus State Community College, and Community Change for my contributions to community building.
Passionate about writing, anthropology research, and creating initiatives that strengthen minority communities, I’ve completed business development programs through the Columbus Chamber, The Lincoln Theater, and the Minority Small Business Association, alongside more than 1,000 hours of leadership and DEI training. A certified life purpose coach, somatic movement practitioner, and published poet, I’ve had the pleasure of critiquing communication workshops, customer service practices, and invited to curate events that span nationwide and globally.
Through owning a business, I’ve embraced the opportunity to be present in my daughter’s life, aiming to inspire her by modeling the pursuit of dreams. Having become a mother at 19, one of my greatest desires was to show my daughter the importance of determination and pride in one’s journey.
Today, I’m most proud of creating opportunities for individuals to connect and fostering strong, vibrant communities.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Not all clients are good clients- you don’t have to accept every client. Make sure they fit your mission, work ethic, and communication style. Your clients have to fit more than just the dollar amount needed to make the goal! Once I started to have a description of the types of clients I wanted, finding them and saying no to the ones who didn’t fit left room and energy to focus on those who did.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a creative is that I get to use my creativity to help people and give them content to indulge in. I love using my writing to showcase a brand or inspire someone with a quote that brightens their day. Being a creative is a luxury; having a dual analytical and creative mind allows me to be unlimitedly versatile, and it’s a blessing.
