We recently connected with Genesis Maxim and have shared our conversation below.
Genesis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
The learning process is so important in anything because it helps you find your personal style and it reminds you that there’s always more you can learn or fine tune what you already know. That being said, I think if I could go back and do something differently, it would most definitely be to find an established photographer who I could shadow and learn from. I had this idea in my head when I first started my business that nobody wanted to give me their “secrets to success”. But the more I work with and meet fellow photographers, the more I realize that they are so helpful and want other photographers to succeed as well.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Genesis and I am a photographer and filmmaker! I first got into photography about 8 years ago and soon fell in love with working with couples and families. My hobby turned into a side gig, and now it’s my main line of work!
I love that I get to tag along on your family days, intimate elopements, engaged couples, new parents etc. and make a beautiful piece of art out of your life.
I enjoy getting creative with my work and finding new ways to showcase my clients unique story.
Alongside photography, I’ve had an interest in film making. I recently started offering wedding films to a select number of clients and I am excited to continue with that and see where it takes me in the future!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think the main thing I find that non-creatives struggle to understand is that different artists have different styles. If you’re asking a creative/artist to copy a specific style that isn’t theirs, you need to find a different artist to work with.
Artists want clients who appreciate their style just as much as a client wants that specific style.
If you find someone who matches what you’re looking for style-wise and who you click with, hire them!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting that overjoyed response from a client after they’ve gotten a chance to view their final gallery. It’s always so exciting to hear how much they love the work you’ve delivered and knowing that your work will be viewed and appreciated for these families future families.
