We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Genesis Espinoza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Genesis below.
Hi Genesis , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I always knew I wanted to have my own private practice but while I was in my Master’s program, it seemed like a hard dream to accomplish since there were no courses on how to start up your own private practice. My supervisor and mentor at the time really inspired me to leave my 9-5 gig at the mental health agency I was at. It was scary since I was so used to the benefits and salary that I was receiving. I took the leap of faith regardless and now I have a group private practice with 5 clinicians.
My advice for anyone considering starting their own practice would be to network, connect with a mentor, and believe in yourself fiercely. Feel the fear but do it anyway.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Genesis Espinoza. I am a first generation Licensed Marriage and Family therapist, supervisor, and CEO of Healing and Growth, Inc., a Marriage and Family Therapy Corporation, which is a group practice in San Fernando, CA. I knew I wanted to study psychology since I was always intrigued and curious about the brain and human behavior. My group practice consists of 5 clinicians and a virtual assistant. We provide individual, family, and couples therapy, as well as immigration evaluations. We serve individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, immigration issues, and PTSD. I am trained in a variety of evidence based practices including EMDR and Brainspotting. As an owner and CEO of my group practice, I work each day with a humble heart and practice gratitude as much as possible. Being a daughter of immigrants helps me to connect with the Latino population we serve.
I am most proud of my growth and the awesome team that I have.
Any advice for managing a team?
My advice is to be as empathetic, encouraging, and understanding as possible. I think being transparent and celebrating my team’s efforts and great work has been very important. Being available and supportive has also been helpful.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy has been networking with lawyers for the immigration psychosocial evaluations. Consistent advertising on Instagram has also been instrumental.
