Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Genesis Andino. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Genesis , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Ever since I could remember, my parents have always given me the opportunity to express myself creatively. I remember taking lessons as kid such as guitar or ballet. I wanted to try a little bit of everything because I was so fascinated by all things creative. By not putting me in a box, I was able to learn more about who “Genesis” is and what I truly enjoy doing. My parents have always told me that I can do anything I set my mind to and this support has remained strong to this day. I feel confident that any direction I choose to go in, my parents will have my back 100% and as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized what a blessing this is. My parents and family are the people who motivate me the most and in any creative journey, there are some points where you think to yourself “what’s the point” and question yourself and your choices. I always have them to remind me that at the end of the day, the whole “point” is to just enjoy and have fun.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Genesis Andino, also known as Genny. My passion for makeup artistry began in high school when I would occasionally get asked to fix someone’s winged eyeliner in the bathroom or draw on whiskers for Halloween. I really enjoyed helping others with these small details and slowly gained the confidence to create a makeup page where I could share all of my own makeup looks. I began practicing makeup application on family members, friends, and eventually began to take on clients. What started as a hobby eventually developed into one of my favorite creative outlets. I love being able to bring someone’s vision to life whether it’s for a special event such as prom or even on set for short films. From my humble beginnings in a high school bathroom to practicing countless times in my own bathroom, I am proud to say that I am a self taught artist. I’ve taught myself the basics and even dove into learning about special effects makeup application. It’s truly a collaborative process whenever I have the opportunity to do someone’s makeup. Even though I have my own personal style of makeup, I always want my clients to feel that they have full control in regards to how they want to look. I do my best to explain the reasoning behind my techniques so that the client can learn some of my favorite tips and tricks. I’m always an open book when it comes to educating others on makeup application which is what led me to creating video content. Short form videos are my favorite way of showing others that makeup can be easy and fun. I create videos for my own personal page as well as an online cosmetics company where I also work as a Beauty Expert. It’s truly a blessing to be able to do this in my personal life and in my day to day work, and for that I am forever grateful.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When I first started my journey, I did it with the intention of creating for myself. I truly believe that when you create from a place of fun, child-like wonder, your art can resonate with others without even trying. The most rewarding aspect of what I do is when people reach out to tell me directly that they learned something from a video I’ve made or even an interaction that we had. Being told that I’ve inspired them to try something new whether it’s makeup or any other creative endeavor makes me feel like I’m doing something right.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In our society, success can be very individualistic. There’s a lot of focus on “succeeding” whether that is making a lot of money or being extremely well known and having a big platform. The best moments in my creative journey have been when I collaborate with others. Through these collaborations I’m able to meet other creatives and learn more about them and their passions. This makes me want to support them whether it’s going to their art show or telling others in my circle about them. Social media is a powerful tool that can be used to connect people from around the world, but I truly think word of mouth can go a long way within your community and beyond. Some of the opportunities I’ve had are because a friend told another friend who told their friend about me and I feel so blessed to be mentioned in rooms or places I’ve never been. If you know someone who is wanting to share their art with the world, the easiest way to help them is just by talking about them, sharing their art on your social media, and even collaborating with them if they need an extra hand. There’s an entire community of people out there who are all trying to do the same thing, you just have to find them and if you’re lucky they’ll find you.
